Tutor Alum Profile: Becky Rosen

I talked to 2016 JMU Alumnus Becky Rosen about her time with us at the Comm Center (CC) and what she’s doing now!

Q: How long were you a tutor at the CC?

A: I started as a tutor during the May semester in 2015 and then for the entirety of my senior year from Fall 2015-Spring 2016!

Q: What was your favorite part of working at the CC?

A: My favorite part was getting to know the clients we worked with and helping them find confidence in their presentations.  I loved the atmosphere we created as a staff as well as the chance to learn more about how to tutor effectively while surrounded by friends.

Q: What are you doing now?

A: I’m currently working with City Year AmeriCorps in San Antonio, Texas.  I work in a high school with 9th and 10th grade students. Working with my partner teacher, I do English coursework, attendance and behavior check ins, and help with setting goals for student progress.  I’m also the English Coordinator and assist the Speech and Debate team practices!

Q: How did working at the CC/using the CC help prepare you for your job now?

A: I have found that as the English coordinator a lot of what I do is help lead meetings to create lesson plans and discuss tutoring best practices.  I think much of what I’ve been able to bring to that table I learned from my time at the CC.  Also, with each of my students I help them create goals for their attendance, behavior, and coursework. From working at the CC I learned the importance of setting a goal even if it was simply a goal for the client to reach by the end of the appointment.  Additionally by using the center, I learned how to utilize PowerPoint and info graphics to make them more effective which has already come in handy when creating lesson plans as well as newsletters for parents.

We’re very excited to learn more from Becky and past tutors like her so that we can help the students of today and tomorrow the best we can! Best of luck to Becky in all her endeavors!
