Spring 2016 SCOM Final Exam Review Workshops

picture of students studying for exam togetherWith the exception of a few students, passing the School of Communication Studies general education course exam is a requirement for graduation. Each student takes the same exam, yet until last semester there had not been an organized way for these students to collectively work together in preparation for the exam. Last year, the Communication Center held its first SCOM Final Review workshops and they turned out to be wildly successful! Here’s why.

The SCOM final may seem daunting to first year college students. Preparing alongside other students, and under the guidance of Communication Center Consultants, can be reassuring. At the Center, we have aimed to perfect our tutoring skills to help students who are attempting tasks such as the SCOM final exam.

Many students suffer from test-anxiety. Frequently, first year college students are not accustomed to taking comprehensive final exams, such as the SCOM final exam. Therefore, it can be intimidating to realize that a large portion of your overall grade is dependent on one exam. At the Communication Center, we can offer test-taking strategies that will minimize anxiety, but more importantly we will help you feel more comfortable with the material you will be tested on.

The SCOM final exam is largely concept based, meaning that the students are questioned on situational based questions. It’s about applying terms that you learned over the semester, not necessarily memorizing the word-for-word definition of each. Simply knowing the terms won’t get you far on this test.

During the workshops last semester, students had the ability to study in small groups with each other while having access to one-on-one assistance with the Communication Center tutors for immediate answers to their questions. These sessions were mostly self-guided, because we wanted students to be able to spend their time working on the concepts that they struggled with the most. Studying in groups is one of the best ways to prepare for this exam, because it allows for a more interactive manner of studying.

Students who attended a SCOM final exam workshop last semester provided positive feedback. 78% of students polled reported finding the session to be helpful, and the same number of students also reported that they found studying alongside their peers to be beneficial. 68% reported feeling more confident in their ability to take the SCOM final exam. Finally, 100% of students reported that the Communication Center tutors were knowledgeable with the SCOM content.

While we are very happy with the responses from the first exam workshops, we are aware that there is always room for improvement. Therefore, we have spent time this semester perfecting our approach to the SCOM final exam workshops. This semester a short presentation on topics covered in class will be added to the review sessions. Please join us at the end of the semester to get your study on! Registration is limited, so sign up ASAP. We can’t wait to see everyone there!
