Special Admissions Requirements

The Admissions Committee considers applicants for admission without regard to their intended major. However, some applicants also need to complete additional requirements established by academic programs. In these cases, the admissions office admits you into the university and the academic area admits you into their program.

In addition to the regular first year student and transfer admission requirements, students who intend to major in nursing must submit a BSN Admission Application. Applications, admission criteria, and admission deadlines may be found on the Department of Nursing website.

Portfolio reviews for incoming freshman art majors are conducted on campus and at select off-campus National Portfolio Review Days. Though not required for admission to JMU or the School of Art, Design and Art History, a portfolio review is highly encouraged as a way for the student to get feedback on his/her work, learn important information about the school and meet faculty members. A portfolio review is required for scholarship consideration. Students unable to attend a review day in person are encouraged to submit a digital portfolio, along with the school's supplemental application form, to the School of Art, Design and Art History. The link for the online digital portfolio submission process can be found on the school's website.

Transfer students or students who are currently enrolled in JMU under another major and who wish to declare a graphic design, interior design or studio art major are required to submit a portfolio for review. Transfer and change of major portfolios will be reviewed once each fall and spring semester.

Transfer and change of major students who are not recommended for admission to the graphic design, interior design or studio art major may reapply the following semester. Portfolio reviews for transfer and change of major students are held prior to advance registration.

All students intending to major in graphic design or interior design are required to submit an additional portfolio for review after completing entry-level graphic design or interior design course work.

Auditions for music are given on three specific dates in January and February. It is important that students indicate their intention to participate in the audition process by January 15.

Theatre, Musical Theatre and Dance

Admissions to the theatre, musical theatre, and dance programs are by audition for performers or portfolio review for design/technical theatre or theatre studies (directing, dramaturgy, theatre scholarship, etc.) students. Theatre and musical theatre auditions/portfolio reviews are held in January and early February for first year student applicants. Auditions and portfolio reviews for transfer students are held in the late fall and mid-spring.
