Team Receives $325,000 grant to Reduce Polluted Stormwater Runoff

The grant, Community Solutions to Stormwater Issues in Blacks and Cooks, was awarded by the Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund and the National Fish and Wildlife Federation on May 6, 2009 to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation/City of Harrisonburg/Eastern Mennonite University/Virginia Department of Environmental Quality/Soil and Water Conservation District/James Madison University team. By the end of the three-year project, more than 200 rain barrels, rain gardens, green roofs, streamside forest buffers and other practices will be installed. These runoff-reducing practices will stop 509 pounds of nitrogen, 78 pounds of phosphorus and 19 tons of sediment each year from flowing off lawns, schoolyards, public lands and commercial properties into Blacks Run.
