Conservation Feedback Project to Launch in the Residence Halls

JMU is one of the first universities to adopt the Building Dashboard, allowing our Village Residence Hall community to see, building-by-building, the rate of energy and water.  Frederickson Hall won this years’ six week conservation competition with 20% reductions in energy and water use.  The competition, called the Village Green Wars, occurs annually, but the competition incorporated Dashboard for the first time this year.

The intent of the real-time Dashboard information dissemination is that student residents will better understand and respond to the ecological consequences of their daily consumption decisions. Implementation of real-time visual feedback on consumption is associated with significant reductions in energy use.  See “Dormitory Residents Reduce Electricity Consumption When Exposed to Real-time Visual Feedback and Incentives”. The web-based application from Lucid Design Group launched in late January 2009 to the nine residence halls in the Village.  See the JMU’s Dashboard at http://buildingdashboard.com/clients/jmu/.
