At JMU

Citizenship

As stated in the Environmental Stewardship Action Plan, JMU will:

Develop a plan for sustainable grounds, where sustainable may be native, naturalized, reforested, or ultra-low maintenance

  • Implement a social media-based stewardship campaign to engage students in a dialogue about stewardship
  • Integrate training on environmental best practices into existing extracurricular programs
  • Identify and implement best practices for environmentally-responsible behavior change
  • Implement innovation mini-grants to foster implementation of creative behavior change campaigns

Increase employee adoption of environmental best practices

  • Form stewardship committees for each building to organize and advocate for individual and departmental stewardship
  • Expand the Stewardship Training and Development Series to include programs for building coordinators and assistants
  • Implement a challenge that motivates employees to adopt environmental best practices

Examples of our progress:

  • The Student Government Association created an environmental stewardship committee. Students organized “Food Week” as part of the national Food Day effort. Over 1,000 people attended the Food Week activities. Other university-wide student environmental stewardship activities included the growth of the bicycle library, CycleShares, and Reel Change film festival.
