Administration
As stated in the Environmental Stewardship Action Plan, JMU will:
Engage stakeholder input at all levels via the standing ISNW service committees
Consider university policies to institutionalize environmental best practices
Assess and disseminate progress
- Track building water and electricity consumption and disseminate online (monthly for all buildings and in real time where available)
- Produce a JMU greenhouse gas emissions inventory (biennially)
- Develop environmental stewardship indicators and gauge environmental progress relative to peer institutions (annually)
Seek sponsored programs and private funds to support environmental stewardship activities
- Employ grant writing assistance to increase the quantity of external funding applications
Examples of our progress:
-
JMU was named in Princeton Review’s Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition. The Academic Affairs Division adopted two environmental stewardship goals, one focused on instruction and one on behavior. JMU successfully expanded its recycling program to collect #1-#7 plastics, and nearly all on-campus food packaging was replaced with compostable packaging.
