Bridging the Valley: A STEP Ahead for STEM Majors
James Madison University has partnered with Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC), Bridgewater College (BC), Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), SRI Inc., and the Shenandoah Valley Partnership to address the challenges of building additional STEM major enrollments and retaining students to program completion. The National Science Foundation awarded the partners nearly $1.5 million to meet this goal.

In this workshop we will discuss contemporary motivational theories on student learning and how they acn be applied in teaching STEM coursework and in promoting interest in STEM careers. We will also have an interactive session to share the particular motivational challenges that you face in your own teaching of STEM students, and we will work collaboratively to offer solutions.

The 51st annual Shenandoah Valley Regional Science Fair is scheduled at James Madison University. To be eligible to exhibit a project a student must reside in the Shenandoah Valley Fair Region (roughly between Clarke Co to the north and Rockbridge Co to the south), be enrolled in one of the grades 6-12 in any public, private, parochial, Christian school or in an equivalent documented program of home schooling.Senior level students (grades 9-12) compete for an opportunity to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in San Jose CA. Entries from participating schools/home school students must be received on or before Feb. 20, 2009.
The SVRSF is sponsored by the College of Mathematics and Science.

The 17th Virginia Junior Science and Humantities Symposium is scheduled at James Madison University. The Va JSHS provides an opportunity for for students to share their scientific, mathematical or engineering research via oral presentations. Any Virginia student in grades 9-12 may apply. Students compete for scholarship funds and the opportunity to present their research at the National JSHS. It is sponsored by the US ARMY, US Air Force and US Naval Services, the Academy of Applied Sciences and College of Mathematics and Sciences. Deadline to request information is Dec 10, 2010. Deadline to submit applications is Jan 15, 2010.
