Following is a list of grants awarded in FY 97 with their JMU researchers and funding agencies.


"Basic School Project." Dr. Mary Ellen Bafumo, Basic School Project, received $166,000 to continue network activities and to position Basic School concepts for consistent expansion beyond the network

"Facilitating Licensure of School Personnel in Speech Language Pathology." Dr. Nicholas W. Bankson, Communication Science and Disorders, received $55,516 to provide a masters program in Speech Pathology at JMU.

" Interpretation of Newborn Hearing Screens Performed at Rockingham Memorial Hospital." Dr. Nicholas Bankson, Communication Sciences and Disorders, received $7,500 to provide services for infant identification of hearing loss.

"1997 Scottish Rite Clinic." Dr. Nicholas Bankson, Communication Sciences and Disorders, received $13,750 to provide a language disorders clinic.

"CISAT Pre-Service Teacher Enhancement Workshop.", Dr. James L. Barnes, Integrated Science and Technology, received $20,000 to conduct the workshop.

"Carnegie Partnership in Education Agreement." Dr. Jerry A. Benson, Education and Psychology, received $60,000 for the Carnegie Partnership in Education Agreement".

"Inquiry into School Based Practice." Dr. Linda P. Blanton, School of Education, received $10,000 to provide leadership training, and technical support to area school systems.

"Rural Life and Art in the Shenandoah Valley, A Teachers Institute." Dr. Dorothy A. Boyd-Rush, Dean Graduate School & Dr. Ann E. McCleary, received $4,096 to provide courses to teachers that explore traditional arts in the Shenandoah Valley , and how to incorporate the arts into classroom learning.

"Academy for the Academic Achievement and Development of African American Males." Mr. Byron S. Bullock, Student Affairs, received $46,126 to provide an intense academic and developmental experience to ninth and tenth grade African American Male students who have latent potential for success beyond the secondary level.

"The Life Skills Academy: An Innovative Approach Linking Academic Achievement with Success Strategies for Middle School Girls." Mr. Byron S. Bullock, Student Affairs, received $3,984 to provide "at risk" middle school girls with a positive view of academic achievement as it relates to their own personal development.

"Intergovernmental Personnel Act Assignment Agreement." Dr. David C. Carothers, Mathematics, received $88,556 to provide an intergovernmental personnel act assignment agreement for Diane Spresser.

"Employee Development Services." Dr. John B. Noftsinger, Jr., Economic Development and Partnership & Dr. Charles W. Curry, Continuing Education, received $249,996 to provide effective employee development services for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"Training Program for Department of Correctional Education at James Madison University." Dr. Charles W. Curry, Continuing Education, received $21,811 to provide computer training sessions.

"African American Female Institute for Learning and Development." Ms. Tatia R. Daniels, Multicultural Student Services, received $20,000 to provide an intense academic and developmental experience for rising eight and ninth grade African-American females.

"Virginia State Transition Program." Ms. Tatia R. Daniels, Multicultural Student Services, received $62,000 to provide a Virginia student transition program.

"Chemical Applications of Lasers Short Course." Dr. Benjamin DeGraff, Chemistry, received $63,988 to support a short summer course titled "Chemical Application of Lasers" and provide appropriate equipment.

"Photochemistry and Photophysics of Transition Metal Complexes." Dr. Benjamin DeGraff, Chemistry, received $17,862 to synthesize and photophysically characterize several families of complexes which should be useful as probes in the study of the dynamics of biomolecules.

"Genetic Pathways to Polyhydroxyalkanoate Synthesis in Plants." Dr. Douglas E. Dennis, Biology, received $180,699 to use a Klebsiella aerogenes strain that carries a Nocardia corallina PHA synthase gene as a detector system for genes that encode enzymes that access cellular metabolisms and supply substrates to the PHA synthase.

"Naturalization of Acidic Waters." Dr. Daniel M. Downey, Chemistry, received $19,390 to expand the quality of water study on the aquatic resources of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.

"Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry in Environmental and Analytical Chemistry." Dr. Daniel M. Downey, Chemistry, received $4,000 to provide analysis of water samples obtained from Laurel Bed Lake and/or vicinity streams in the Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area (CMWMA).

"Amphibian Monitoring Project." Dr. Daniel M. Downey, Chemistry, received $2,000 for analysis of water samples taken for the Forest-wide Amphibian Monitoring Project.

"CPB Next Step Grant for James Madison University." Dr. Charles W. Dubenezik, School of Education, received $4,493 to find an effective and cost-efficient way of providing Rockingham County teachers with an additional assistance in using and developing technology-based learning material and activities.

"Teacher Training Institute for Advanced Placement Human Geography." Dr. Joseph D. Enedy, Center for Geographic Information Science, received $25,000 to provide a teacher training institute for advanced placement human geography.

"Virginia Geographic Alliance Harrisonburg Region FY97." Dr. Joseph D. Enedy, Geographic Information Science, received $12,000 to administer the Virginia’s Geographic Alliance activities in Harrisonburg and distribute the statewide newsletter.

"Nutrient Assessment and Water Quality Monitoring for Lake Shenandoah, Rockingham County, Virginia." Dr. Andrew Evans, Jr. & Dr. Steven P. Frysinger, Integrated Science and Technology, received $5,000 to determine the extent of nutrient contribution form each source so that appropriate management actions can be taken to improve the overall water quality of Lake Shenandoah and enhance its value as a local fishery.

"Independent Science Activities/SA CHILD." Dr. Steven H. Fairchild, Early Childhood Education, received $2,830 to deliver workshops on Independent Science Activities for School-aged child care providers of Virginia.

"Multimedia Educational Environmental Quality Game." Dr. Steven P. Frysinger, Integrated Science and Technology, received $15,000 to produce an interactive multimedia computer software system which will be used to educate and inform users about the current environmental concepts and issues within the parks and refuges today.

"Stage I Evaluation of Belle Construction Areas." Dr. Clarence R. Geier, Sociology and Anthropology, received $3,241 to provide field testing at Belle Grove construction areas.

"Archaeological Survey of the Glen Burnie Tract." Dr. Clarence R. Geier, Sociology and Anthropology, received $13,500 to provide an archaeological survey of Clark County Mill sites.

"Phase II Cost-Share Agreement." Dr. Clarence Geier, Dr. William P. Boyer, Jr., & Dr. Carole Nash, Sociology and Anthropology, received $500 to provide field work involving the field investigation of the headwaters of North River in Augusta County.

"Cooperation Amendment Between JMU and George Washington and Jefferson National Forests for the Upland Archeology in East Symposium." Dr. Clarence Geier, Sociology and Anthropology, received $1,800 to provide funding for the upland archeology in the east symposium.

"Study of the Nucleon, A System of Three Quarks." Dr. Kevin L. Giovanetti, Physics, received $30,000 to continue contributing to various aspects of the overall program and detector development with focus on the forward angle calorimeters.

"Shenandoah Valley Pure Water 2000 Forum." Mr. Paul Goodall, Integrated Science and Technology, received $44,000 to support the initiatives of the Shenandoah Valley Pure Water Forum.

"Virginia Child Protection Newsletter FY97." Dr. Joann H. Grayson, Psychology, received $39,600 to provide a child protection newsletter.

"Joint Nesting and Genetic Demography in Four-Toed Salamander." Dr. Reid N. Harris & Dr. Ivor T. Knight, Biology, received $215,529 to integrate and understand the role of behavior as a link between the genetic composition of a population and population dynamics.

"Preparing Teachers of the Seriously Emotionally Disturbed for Rural Areas." Dr. David E. Herr, Special Education, received $122,116 to assist in the amelioration of this deficit by preparing highly competent teachers of the seriously emotionally disturbed to teach in rural areas.

"Mini-Society Implementation Project." Dr. Martha C. Hopkins, Center for Economic Education, received $5,000 to conduct awareness activities for a local YESS!/Mini-Society student activities.

"Madison Summer Health Care Institute." Dr. Sandra Hopper, Nursing, received $13,509 to promote the recruitment of qualified high school students to the health care professions with special emphasis on students from rural and medically under-served areas and to minority students who have traditionally been underrepresented in the health care profession.

"The Blue Ridge AHEC Partnership FY 1997." Dr. Vida S. Huber, Nursing, received $207,702 to provide a Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center at JMU.

"Microbiological Analysis of Ocean Sediments at Deep Water Dump Site 106." Dr. Ivor T. Knight, Biology, received $2,490 to collect samples at Deep Water Dump Site 106 for presence of sewage contamination, and to interpret the data in the context of samples from previous years.

"Environmental Impact Analysis." Dr. Ivor T. Knight, Biology, received $2,490 to study and analyze floor samples for the presence of bacteria which are generally found in sewage.

"96/97 Virginia Community Service Grant." Mr. Susan Lamb, WMRA, received $105,496 to provide a Virginia community service grant.

"FY97 National Program Production and Acquisition Grant." Ms. Susan Lamb, WMRA, received $35,721 to provide a National Program Production and Acquisition Grant.

"FY97 Community Service Grant." Ms. Susan Lamb, WMRA, received $86,759 to provide the FY97 community service grant.

"Afro-Mexican Identities and National Discourse on Mexico’s ‘Costa Chica’." Dr. Laura A. Lewis, Sociology and Anthropology, received $3,768 to provide research.

"Transform Infrared Investigation of Nucleotide Binding in the Recombination Protein, RecA." Dr. Gina MacDonald, Chemistry, received $20,000 to utilize Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) difference spectroscopy to investigate structure-function relationships in RecA, an Escherichia coli, protein that performs DNA strand exchange.

"An Infrared Stereoscopic Study of RecA-Identifying Protein Interactions that Regulate DNA Strand Exchange." Dr. Gina MacDonald, Chemistry, received $37,224 to utilize Rouier transform infrared (FTIR) difference spectroscopy to investigate the relationship between protein structure and function in the Escherichia coli protein, RecA.

"Procurement of Incident Based Reporting Systems." Mr. Alan MacNutt, Public Safety, received $19,000 for the implementation of an incident-based reporting system.

"Classroom Teacher Skills for Violence Prevention." Ms. Jeanne Martino-McAllister, Health Science, received $38,083 to provide comprehensive teacher training for children with aggressive behaviors and ways of dealing with classroom management.

"Project REACH Outcomes." Ms. Jeanne Martino-McAllister, Dr. H. Richard Travis, Dr. Michael Deaton, & Dr. Thomas Syre, Health Science, received $10,456 to provide training for school personnel in the area of alcohol and drug prevention.

"Reducing the Aggressive and Challenging Behaviors in Elementary Schools." Ms. Jeanne Martino-McAllister & Dr. H. Richard Travis, Health Science, received $33,000 to provide four regional workshops for reducing the aggressive and challenging behaviors in elementary schools.

"Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project/13th Annual." Ms. Jeanne Martino-McAllister & Dr. H. Richard Travis, Health Science, received $22,913 to provide conference planning services for the 13th annual Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse prevention Project (YADAPP).

"Talk it Out, Conflict Resolution in the Elementary Classroom." Ms. Jeanne Martino-McAllister & Dr. H. Richard Travis, Health Science, received $45,213 to provide workshops for conflict resolution in the elementary classroom.

"Career Enhancement Program." Dr. Shirley B. Merlin, Career Enhancement Program, received $28,426 to provide individualized instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, typing and computer skills to be provided at the mobile learning center for ages 16+.

"Technical-Related Academic Career Competence." Dr. Esther H. Minskoff, Special Education, received $72,897 to provide administrative support to the Technical Related Academic Career Competence (TRACC) program housed at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitative Center.

"Pre-service Graduate Training of Transition Teachers for the Mildly Handicapped in Rural Areas." Dr. Gerald Minskoff, Special Education, received $124,129 to continue the preparation of personnel for careers in Special Education.

"Characterization of Three Glucosiadases from Arabidopsis thaliana." Dr. Jonathan D. Monroe, Biology, received $92,290 to provide a set of experiments to characterize the structure and function of three glucosidases from Arabidopsis thaliana.

"1997 Governor’s Russian Studies Academy." Dr. Elizabeth Neatrour, Foreign Languages and Literature, received $64,700 to provide the Governor’s Russian Studies Academy. "An Economic Development Plan for Page County for the 21st Century."

Dr. John B. Noftsinger, Jr. , Economic Development & Dr. Devin C. Bent, Political Science, received $6,000 to develop a partnership with Page County and JMU to support economic development in Page County.

"JMU/Shenandoah Valley of Virginia Payload Project." Dr. John B. Noftsinger, Jr., Economic Development & Dr. James L. Barnes, Integrated Science and Technology, received $25,000 to conduct a series of payload projects for the Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority in order to help them enhance the future economic development in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"Levering Technology Today for Tomorrow’s Leaders." Dr. John B. Noftsinger, Jr., Economic Development & Mr. Bill Carter, Integrated Science and Technology, received $5,000 to establish an innovative technical internship program.

"Educational Consultant Conference." Dr. Paige Powell, Human Development Center, received $65,050 to provide an educational consultant.

"James Madison University - Shenandoah Valley Child Development Clinic." Dr. Paige Powell, Human Development Center, received $301,030 to provide services which are necessary for early identification and amelioration of handicapping conditions in infants, children and young adults.

"Computational Investigations of Noise in Subsonic Round Jets." Dr. Charles D. Pruett, Mathematics, received $25,883 for a two year computational investigation, based on LES, with the ultimate goal of identifying and demonstrating viable techniques for noise suppression in subsonic round jets.

"Certification of Managers." Dr. Jackson E. Ramsey, College of Integrated Science and Technology, received $250,000 to provide administrative oversight for the Institute of Certified Professional Managers.

"Humanitarian Demining Support Services." Dr. Jackson E. Ramsey, College of Integrated Science and Technology, received $693,900 to provide training and engineering support to ESSEX Corporation for developing demining support systems.

"Shenandoah Valley Partnerships." Dr. Jackson E. Ramsey, College of Integrated Science and Technology, received $90,000 to provide partnerships.

"Professional Training Seminars." Dr. Brad M. Roof, Center for Professional Development, received $151,607 to provide the continual delivery of JMU sponsored seminars.

"Valley Voice of the Blue Ridge Grant." Ms. Elizabeth A. Rubush, Valley Voice, received $7,500 to provide radios in support of the Valley Voice Program.

"Innervation and Function of Regenerated Hair Cells." Dr. Brenda M. Ryals, Communication Sciences and Disorders, received $79,064 to continue to study regeneration of hair cells.

"Thermal Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory (T-SAMTL)."

Dr. Anthony A. Teate, Integrated Science and Technology, received $99,483 to provide for a Thermal-Structures and materials testing laboratory (T-SAMTL) in the College of Integrated Science and Technology.

"Developing the Local Models for Improving the Coordination of Care for Medicaid Obstetric Beneficiaries." Dr. Jon M. Thompson, Health Sciences, received $5,500 to address the need for improved coordination of obstetrics and prenatal care to the Medicaid population.

"Teacher Training for Principles of Technology Courses." Dr. Arvid Van Dyke, Integrated Science and Technology, received $9,963 to coordinate up to six workshops that will prepare new teachers to teach Principles of Technology I and II using the Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD) materials.

"School Psychology Internship Agreement." Dr. Patricia J. Warner, received $82,500 to provide School Psychology internships.

"Presentation of the Richmond Ballet." Mr. Jerry E. Weaver, College of Arts and Letters, received $4,000 to provide funding for the Presentation of the Richmond Ballet.

"Strengthening Teacher Preparation Programs in School Health and HIV Prevention Education." Dr. M. Theresa Wessel & Dr. Stephen H. Stewart received $3,000 to provide education on HIV for elementary students..

"JMU Small Business Development." Ms. Karen W. Wigginton, Small Business Development Center, received $115,000 to provide counseling to small business development.

"Microbiological Characterization of the North River Watershed." Dr. Bruce A. Wiggins, received $6,000 to provide important information to governing agencies in order to access the long and short term changes in our fresh water resources brought about by both agricultural and urban development.

"The Development of a Model Partnership Program for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Implementation in National Parks." Dr. James J. Winebrake, Integrated Science and Technology, received $15,802 to develop a university-national park partnership.

"Center for Economic Education." Dr. William Wood, Economics, received $46,990 to improve economic literacy in the Center’s service area.

"Meeting the New Virginia Standards of Learning in Economics." Dr. William C. Wood, received $9,529 to offer a summer workshop to help educators prepare to implement the new standards in social studies.
