National Association of Social Workers

The National Association of Social Workers serves the critical and diverse needs of the entire social work profession. The NASW Program Unit, a student unit of this nationally recognized organization, is under the auspices of the Whitney Young District, Virginia NASW. Membership is open to all social work majors who have paid their dues to the National Association of Social Workers. NASW membership provides students with professional publications, voting privileges in NASW state and national elections, opportunity to serve on district and state committees, and the opportunity to purchase professional liability insurance.

Expectations of NASW-Program Unit (NASW-PU) Officers and Membership:


  1. Update and maintain NASW-PU’s portion of the Student Organization bulletin board

  2. Serve as a link between NASW-VA and students

  3. Promote membership in NASW

  4. Plan and present one Brown Bag per semester for students that addresses practice and policy issues facing the profession

  5. Plan and implement one Student Development Activity per academic year

  6. Coordinate a job/career fair each March during Social Work Month

  7. Serve on NASW-VA committees as appropriate

  8. Designate a student to be the key contact for JMU-BSW Program for NASW-VA

Our Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree prepares students for beginning professional practice, and is the entry-level credential as recognized by the National Association of Social Workers. More >
