SS13-1 East European Orthodox Iconography – Part II

Description: This course in Orthodox Iconography is addressed to all who desire to develop a unique artistic language characterized by its integration into Byzantine art.  It is an introduction to the art of the Orthodox icon, including study of specific icons and information about important icon techniques, especially the gold-leafing technique. 
Iconography is a special Religious Art that belongs to the Tradition of the Eastern -Catholic and Orthodox Churches.  Because of the strict rules that an iconographer follows in trying to express the mystery of God and man, the Orthodox Icons have a universal quality. The Icon reminds people that they are created in the image and likeness of God, showing them their original dignity and destiny.

Instructor:  Anca Schmittou studied mathematics, art and psychology in her native Romania. For the last ten years Anca has been teaching math in the United States. She has been involved in exhibitions and participated in group art shows and contests in the U. S., Washington DC, Romania, Hungary and Japan. Anca is a permanent artist at the CoArtGallery in Staunton, VA.

SS13-2 Moonlight Reflections by the Lake- Oil Painting  (Limited to 8, selected by lottery)

Location: Village Hall, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Center
Participants for this class will be chosen by lottery.  Do not enclose payment with registration form.  Payment will be requested at the time of notification.
Description: This is a beginner’s oil painting workshop using paints that clean up with water. You will learn step-by-step techniques to complete a scene you will be proud to share. You will go home with a finished 11 x 14 painting in four hours that you can frame and enjoy or give as a gift. I will furnish the materials needed for this class. Supply fee cost: $5.00 per student (covers paints and canvas). Painters can bring a roll of paper towels, as well as drinks and snacks if they choose.

Instructor:  Diane Ricketson is a certified Dorothy Dent instructor, having completed three levels of instructions, and spent more than 180 hours of training with the well-known artist Dorothy Dent in the DDCI Certification Program in Republic, Missouri. She is a listed instructor on her website www.ddent.com   Diane is also a Certified Wilson Bickford Painting Partner/WBPP with his fun and fast painting sessions.   Diane has taught small beginner classes from her home since August 2010 and will be retiring from JMU Human Resources in 2013.

SS13-3 Hands Only CPR – AED  (Limited to 15)

Day/Time:  Wednesday, 9:30-11:30am

Location: Emergency Prep, 3221 Peoples Drive, Suite 120, Harrisonburg
Description: Master the life saving techniques of CPR for adults; learn how to use the Automatic External Defibrillator, and what to do for a choking victim.  Each participant will have hands on practice using a mannequin.

Instructor:  Brad Neher, owner of Emergency Prep, offers CPR classes in the Harrisonburg area.  Brad will be assisted by Leslie Ney.
