- LLI Social Event
This spring semester the Lifelong Learning Institute, in conjunction with JMU’s School of Music faculty member Dr. William Dabback, will initiate a New Horizons Band program. New Horizons Music programs provide entry points to music making for adults, including those with no musical experience at all and those who were active in school music programs, but have been inactive for a long period of time.
Many of you have expressed interest in this program and we will be holding an informational meeting on Thursday, January 24, at 4:00 p.m. at Gilkerson Activity Center, Westover Park
At this meeting, Dr. Dabback will provide further information on the band program and specific details regarding participation. Dr. Dabback served as an instructor and conductor of the New Horizons program at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, which was the first such program in the country.
The LLI New Horizons Band members will begin meeting on Thursdays, from 4:00-6:00 p.m., January 31, and will continue meeting through May 1. Small group instruction and practice will allow members to develop or redevelop their skills and allow each person the opportunity to play band arrangements. The tentative cost of this opportunity will be approximately $130.00 for the 13 week semester, plus $15.00 for LLI membership. The cost of instruments varies and rent-to-own programs are available at stores around town. Dr. Dabback will provide more information on these details at the January 24 meeting.
Active participation in music fills important needs for adults – the need for challenging intellectual activity, the need to be a contributing member of a group, and the need to have exciting events in the future. For many people, music can serve these vital needs better than anything else. It provides an opportunity to experience profound and serious thoughts or joyful moments. It makes connections to the past, the present and the future. It also connects one to other individuals and other cultures. Making music is a way of making vital connections to life.
There are no auditions. Every person has musical potential that can be developed to a level that will be personally rewarding. Come make music with the LLI New Horizons Band!
Please call the LLI office at 540-568-2923, if you plan to attend this informational meeting. For more information on the concept of the New Horizons Music Programs, go to www.newhorizonsmusic.org
