Dr. Poe joined the faculty of JMU in Fall, 2002. Currently, her core teaching areas are Social Work Practice (micro), Theory, and Family Studies.

In her teaching, Dr. Poe seeks to get concepts “up off the page” by drawing upon experiences from students’ lives, and from her own practice wisdom gained from years of working in a variety of service settings, including specialized foster care, residential services with adolescents, case management for adults with severe disabilities, program development, and staff training.

Dr. Poe's current research foci are social work pedagogy, and generalist work with family systems.

Outside of the classroom, one can find Dr. Poe listening to music in Chesapeake Hall where she serves as Faculty-in-Residence, or heading outdoors for a run or horseback ride.
