Robert Todd Winston, M.S.W. (Class of 1997) named 2018 R. Ann Myers, Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Robert Todd Winston, M.S.W. serves as Associate Vice President of Behavioral Health with RWJBarnabas Health in Jersey City, NJ. He oversees 14 departments ranging from involuntary inpatient to traditional outpatient behavioral health services. Previously he was the Clinical Coordinator and Director of the Psychiatric Residential and Integrated Case Management Service Departments that provide housing, case management and clinical services to over 500 individuals diagnosed with a severe and persistent mental illness. Mr. Winston has been able to combine both the micro and macro components of professional social work through progressive education and leadership opportunities.  He has improved services for those experiencing mental health challenges through the application of evidence-based practices, and along the way encouraged social work practitioners through leadership and training workshops.

Beyond his current professional experience, he is a great contributor to the profession and his community.  After graduating from the JMU social work department in 1997, Mr. Winston completed his MSW from Rutgers University.  He advanced his clinical skills in Gestalt Psychotherapy, is a LCSW in NY and NJ, and maintains a private practice in psychotherapy.  He has supervised many students in their field experiences through the years for local universities, as well as provided training to social workers in the NJ/NY area.  He has his private pilot license that has led to development of an educational seminar based on “Cockpit/Crew Resource Management” that seeks to ensure everyone’s voice.

Mr. Winston has worked in emergency treatment of individuals experiencing mental health crises for police and EMS.   As an EMT for 23 years he continues to serve his community with a weekly shift at the volunteer rescue unit.  He is certified as a Crisis Prevention Institute Instructor.

Mr. Winston is recognized in NJ as one of the “Top 40 Under Forty” for his administrative efforts.  Mr. Winston is recognized for his board membership at Roots and Wings, a private non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of youth aging out of foster care who have little assistance. Mr. Winston demonstrates where a strong foundation in social work from JMU can lead you.
