Social Work Major: Academic Honors Program
The University offers two honors programs, the JMU Honors Scholars Program and Graduation with Distinction. Participation in the Honors Scholars Program is by invitation from the University. Approximately 50 talented students are selected each year from the entering freshman class to participate in this program.
The Social Work Program provides the opportunity for students to graduate "With Distinction". This honor allows you the opportunity to work in a mentor/student relationship with a faculty member on a specific area of interest. Applications are limited to juniors with a 3.25 or better grade point average. Enrollment in SOWK 499 carries 6 semester hours of academic credit over a two semester period and is by override only. You need to obtain an application from the Honors Office and complete it during first semester of your junior year. One or more social work faculty members will serve on your thesis committee.
