CLASS OF '04

Name: Eileen Horgan
Class of:
2004
Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Job Description:
Development Associate for a non-profit domestic violence organization called Women Against Abuse, Inc.
Contact Info:
eshorgan@hotmail.com
Comments:
I really am inspired by the people in the organization and even the structure of the organization itself. WAA is an all women's organization and has feminist roots. My job is not a direct service position as I was hoping for but I am getting to learn how to write grants which seems like a good skill to have. I feel weird about being in the "real world" because I still think of my life in terms of semesters. I worry that the longer I stay away from school the less likely I will be to go back. I worry that I won't challenge myself to keep up with reading and stay informed in the academic world. But I hope to go to graduate school sometime within the next two years possibly to work on a master's of social work.

Leesburg, VA
Job Description:
Working at the Leesburg Police Department and attending the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy

Comments:
Attending the academy is TOUGH. If you have any students interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, don't hesitate to tell them that they really need passion for the profession or they'll burn out real fast. I love what I'm doing, and I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all of the wonderful professors at JMU for your support and guidance.

And if you're interested, here are some dynamics of my academy session- I am one of 18 women out of 85 people, total. Most of the women are African American, and are employed by the Sheriffs Offices, not by the police departments like myself. There are a good number of college educated individuals, as well as ex-military folks.

Job Description:
Human Resources Manager focused on enterprise wide employee engagement programs for a private organization.
Contact Info:

Comments:
I find it very interesting to see how different areas of human resources relate to the core concepts we learned in our sociology classes. I enjoyed sociology in college, but had no clue at the time how I would use it. About a year after graduating JMU, I studied at George Washington to receive a Masters in Organizational Sciences/Human Resources. It is very rewarding to find a niche that you enjoy that relates back to what we studied. Recently, I have moved into an area that applies motivational theories to our organization and am seeing a larger connection with sociology which is very exciting. The professors in sociology at JMU were excellent and I am very appreciative for what I learned while there.
