J. Edgar Anderson Endowed String Music Scholarship

 Criteria:
     Need Based? No
     Freshman Only? No
 Information:
Established in memory of Mr. J. Edgar Anderson, Professor Emeritus of Music at JMU. The scholarship is restricted to a JMU music student majoring in "string" music. The "string" music faculty should evaluate and recommend a candidate to the Office of Financial Aid no later than May 31st for awarding a scholarship in the coming school year. If no one qualifies for the scholarship in any given year, the scholarship award can be used for financial support of the "string" music curriculum. The Music Department Head and the string faculty need prior approval from the JMU Foundation President in order to use the funds for financial support. The recipient(s) financial need should be considered, however, financial need is not required. The recipient(s) should be in good standing with the university and demonstrate a strong interest in "string" music.
 

Robert Ashby Cello Scholarship

Established to receive charitable contributions in memory of former music professor Dr. Robert C. Ashby to support scholarships for undergraduate cellists majoring in performance, music education, or music industry. This scholarship will be awarded upon the basis of performance ability.

Margaret & Jesse Cook Memorial-Suzanne C. Elmore Endowed Scholarship

 Information:
The Margaret & Jesse Cook Memorial - Suzanne C. Elmore Scholarship Endowment Fund was established with sincere encouragement and support for JMU and the JMU Foundation, Inc. The gift is offered through the support of Suzanne Elmore and family. The recipient shall be a needy student making satisfactory academic progress. It is preferred that this scholarship be awarded to a Music major.
 

Joy Hollar Costello '58 Scholarship Endowment in Music Education

 Information:
An endowed scholarship established by Joy Hollar Costello '58 for the support of the Joy Hollar Costello '58 Scholarship Endowment in Music Education. Through this scholarship, funds will be provided annually to an outstanding undergraduate student scholar in the music education program at James Madison University who demonstrates high academic accomplishment. Beyond this criteria, the appointment of a student as a Joy Hollar Costello '58 Music Education Scholar shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.
 

Samuel G. Cross String Education Scholarship

An endowed scholarship Inspired by the School of Music and by Dr. Robert McCashin as Director of Orchestras at JMU to support the String Music Education Program at James Madison University. This scholarship is intended to benefit a String Education Major in the School of Music of the Junior or Senior Level. The one year award will initially be made to one student each year. A student may be re-selected in subsequent years. This stipulation is made so that the student establishes at least a two year music and academic track record, the basis upon which selection for the scholarship will be made. Recipient of the Samuel G. Cross Education Scholarship will be determined by the Scholarship Committee in the School of Music based on recommendations from the String Area Faculty of the School of Music.
 

Miriam Denise Gresham Endowed Scholarship

 Information:
An endowed scholarship established in memory of Miriam Denise Gresham. In addition to criteria established by the Financial Aid office, the following criteria applies; this scholarship will provide support for Music Business majors in good standing with an appropriate interest in the music industry program as determined by the Head of the JMU Music Department.
 

Jack B. Moore Flute Scholarship

 Criteria:
     Need Based? No
     Freshman Only? No
 Information:
An endowed scholarship limited to undergraduate and graduate flute students majoring in music at JMU. Recipients shall be selected by the scholarship committee in consultation with the senior, principal flute teacher who will nominate one or more first- time candidates annually by formal letter to the Department of Music Scholarship Committee. The letter will include justification on the basis of the merit of each nominee. The committee may award scholarships in varying amounts and numbers depending upon the number and merit of nominees. Scholarships will be renewable as long as the student continues majoring in flute and remains in good standing. An application of renewal must be initiated by the student in the Spring of each year. Decisions to renew scholarships will be made by the scholarship committee in consultation with the senior, principal flute teacher.
 

Frazier Scholarship fund for the School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts

 Criteria:
     Need Based? No
     Freshman Only? Yes
 Information:

General Expendable. Established with a gift from Bibb Frazier to support students in the School of Music within the College of Visual & Performing Arts via a scholarship fund within the JMU Foundation. This scholarship fund will be used to encourage outstanding students to accept offers of admission by James Madison University and pursue their study of Music in the College of Visual & Performing Arts' School of Music. Students would need to meet certain criteria to be eligible for this scholarship - namely, that at the time of consideration for this scholarship, the candidates would satisfactorily demonstrate they have been accepted for admission to James Madison University and have declared a major in the School of Music.

The scholarship fund that will be known as The Frazier Scholarship Fund for the School of Music in the College of Visual & Performing Arts, with the students who receive these scholarships to be known as Frazier Scholars, or in smaller amounts referred to as a "Frazier Grant".

It is intended that the recipients of this scholarship shall be selected in a manner determined at the discretion of the Director for the School of Music, in consultation with the Dean for the College of Visual & Performing Arts. The donor has several expectations in this regard; specifically, that -

(a) A minimum of one scholarship shall be awarded from this fund each year;

(b) The Dean for the College of Visual & Performing Arts shall act within the Dean's discretion in determining whether a student named as a recipient of one of these scholarships shall receive the scholarship funds in one particular year or over a period of several years, in which case the student shall remain a scholarship recipient as long as the student continues to pursue a course of study within the School of Music and is in good standing with the university; and,

(c)The Dean for the College of Visual & Performing Arts also shall act with the Dean's discretion in determining whether more than five scholarships shall be awarded in any particular year, in keeping with the intention that this scholarship fund shall provide the university with a means to encourage students to attend Madison who may otherwise choose to pursue their undergraduate careers at another college or university.

The appointment of these scholarship recipients shall follow the university's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.

 

Carole G. Jackson Memorial Scholarship Endowment

An endowed scholarship established by The Jackson Family specifically, Peter G. Jackson, Peter S. Jackson, Susan R. Jackson, Diane L. Fellenbaum, John D. Fellenbaum, Susan J. Reid, and Robert D. Reid. The Carole G. Jackson Memorial Scholarship is intended to honor and support outstanding undergraduate student scholars enrolled at James Madison University who are majoring in Music Education. The following additional criteria shall guide the selection of Jackson Family Scholars, if the student is being considered to receive the Carole G. Jackson Memorial Scholarship the student must demonstrate: A need for financial assistance, as determined by the University's Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships; a commitment to the discipline of Music for their professional career, as evidenced by, among other things, a major in music education; a dedication to academic excellence, as evidenced by, among other things, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of application for either scholarship; and, such a grade point average shall be maintained for as long as the student holds either scholarship; an engagement in community service, as evidenced by involvement in community service related activities and organizations in the local communities of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County or elsewhere and a capacity for leadership, as evidenced by, among other things, examples of leadership talent, skills, and experiences. Beyond the specific criteria for scholarship recipients described above, the appointment of a student as a Jackson Family Scholar shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships
 

Lucille Y. Marshall Music Scholarship

Agnes Fagstad McDuffie Piano Scholarship

 Criteria:
     Need Based? No
     Freshman Only? No
 Information:
An endowed scholarship awarded annually to a piano student selected by the two senior members of the JMU piano faculty.
 

Vera Melone Music Scholarship

 Criteria:
     Need Based? No
     Freshman Only? No
 Information:
An endowed scholarship established on January 5, 1989 by Mr. George Conrad, in honor of his wife, Vera Melone, who taught organ and piano at JMU from 1933 to 1937. The endowed music scholarship criteria is as follows: Recipient must be in good standing with a 2.0 GPA or above determined annually prior to the award; must be classified as a full-time student at all times during receivership of the scholarship award. Full-time student means being enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester; Must be deserving and serious regarding the study of music. The JMU Department of Music Scholarship committee, after appropriate review of student applications, shall recommend to the student financial aid committee through the Music Department head, the scholarship recipient on an annual basis.

Piano Student Recognition Fund

Established to receive charitable contributions designated to provide scholarships and/or awards to deserving piano students. The Coordinator of the Piano Area, currently Dr. Eric Ruple, will make recommendations for use of funds.

 

Presser Foundation Music Scholarship

 Criteria:
     Need Based? No
     Freshman Only? No
 Information:
This scholarship is funded by a one year grant from the Presser Foundation. It is not automatically renewed each year. The Presser Scholarship shall be given to an outstanding music major, at or after the end of his or her junior year. The student is to be designated a "Presser Scholar". The award is intended to be a prestigious one recognizing excellence. Announcement of the selection of the "Presser Scholar" is requested to be made in appropriate ways, publicly if possible. The student selected should be identified by the music faculty and the decision communicated by the head of music to The Presser Foundation with a brief statement about the student.
 

James R. Riley Scholarship

G. F. "Pat" Rooney Memorial Scholarship

 Information:
An endowed scholarship established for trumpet majors.
 

Edna T. Shaeffer Memorial Scholarship

 Criteria:

     Freshman Only? No
 Information:

An endowed scholarship established in memory of Edna T. Shaeffer to be awarded to deserving music students with preference given to Madison Singers, or University Chorale, or relatives of former Glee Club members.

 

Ruth B. Spitzer Music Scholarship

 Criteria:
     Need Based? Yes
     Freshman Only? No
 Information:
An endowed scholarship established in memory of Ruth B. Spitzer, a JMU alumna, to award scholarships to keyboard majors on the basis of accomplishment and potential as well as financial need. If no keyboard majors are available, students majoring in voice may then be considered. If no keyboard or voice majors qualify, a clarinet student may then be considered. Recipients shall be chosen by the music department head, and a keyboard or voice instructor from the music department.
 

Elizabeth Swallow Scholarship for Double Reed Music Majors

An annual scholarship established by Dr. Elizabeth Swallow, who is a physician in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She has been in practice in the region, as a member of the Medical Staff at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, since 1987. Dr. Swallow also is a pianist, studying with Dr. Eric Ruple, a distinguished member of the faculty for the School of Music at James Madison University. The Elizabeth Swallow Scholarship for Double Reed Music Majors is for students at James Madison University majoring in the oboe and bassoon, thereby enhancing the School of Music's capacity to attract the best students in the country in these uncommon specialties. The Donor's intention is to provide scholarship support for undergraduate students whose chosen field of study and performance is the oboe or bassoon, which are major disciplines within the School of Music at James Madison University.

In each academic year, there will be one (or more) outstanding undergraduate student scholar(s) designated as the Swallow Music Scholar(s). Once the scholarship is awarded to a student, so long as the student remains a double reed music major in good standing with the School of Music, this scholarship may be renewed for up to three more academic years.

The appointment of a student as a Swallow Music Scholar shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of

 

Vespers Scholarship Endowment

 Information:
An endowed scholarship, The Vespers Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to offer financial assistance to a voice major of outstanding musical and academic achievement. The recipient is to be selected by the music scholarship committee based upon recommendations from the voice faculty.

A.B. Walford Scholarship in Music

The Aurelia B. Walford Scholarships in Music will be administered as stated in the last will and testament of Aurelia Behm Walford:

1.  Applications will be initiated by the student, generally in the spring of the academic year. The application may be accompanied by letters of recommendation from professors or any other person regarding the applicant's ability.

2.  All applications will be reviewed and ranked by the Walford Scholarship Committee, which shall include representatives of the Department of Music, the Department of Communication Arts, and the Department of Art.

3.  The decision of the committee will be made on the basis of the merit of the applicant. Scholarship eligibility shall be limited to those students majoring in applied music or music education, a large portion of which is directly related to classical music.

4.  The scholarship will be renewable as long as the student pursues this major.  The committee may award the scholarships in varying amounts and numbers depending on the funds available and the number and merit of applicants.  The scholarships will be renewable only through application.

 

Ben Wright Music Scholarship

     Need Based? No
     Freshman Only? No
 Information:

An endowed music scholarship in memory of Ben Wright. Recipient to be a string major. If no string major is eligible, then the recipient should be an oboist.
