Scholarship Overview

Established by Sarah Bane Williams in honor of her mother, Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Umphlette Bane '52, for her outstanding life achievement and her lifelong love of Madison College and JMU.

This scholarship is intended to benefit an entering JMU freshman from the County of Halifax, Virginia. In addition to having a 3.5 grade point average, the student will exhibit outstanding extracurricular and service achievement. A new scholarship recipient will be selected each year.

The JMU Director of Scholarships will select the scholarship recipient. Should there be no qualified students from the County of Halifax, this fund may be used to assist a freshman from the City of Suffolk. Should there be no qualified students from the City of Suffolk, this fund may be used to assist a freshman from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
