General Overview Relative to Weapons on Campus
At James Madison University student regulations and university policy prohibit the possession
of any firearm or other weapon on campus except for sworn enforcement personnel in the performance of their duties. The prohibition extends to vehicles. Upon discovery or after receiving a report the individual involved is requested to remove the firearm from campus immediately. Failure to do so may result in the student's Judicial referral and/or arrest, subject an employee to personnel action and/or arrest, and person not affiliated with the university being arrested for trespass and/or a violation of the appropriate state criminal statute.
As hunting is popular in the Shenandoah Valley area, many students and others desire to have access to personal firearms, bows, etc., for hunting or recreational firearms and/or archery use (target skills). In order to accommodate these people the University maintains a secure storage facility for such weapons. Any individual may deposit a weapon into this storage. The person must present valid ID and is given a claim check. The person may reclaim the weapon 24/7 unless at time of return they are determined to be intoxicated or in such an emotional/mental state that it would be unsafe to return the weapon to them at that time.
