Authorship Purpose

This document was composed by adapting an existing plan (used by the Department of Chemistry, James Madison University) for the particular needs and circumstances of the Integrated Science and Technology Program of JMU. Authored by George L. Coffman, Ph.D. (ISAT Chemical Hygiene and Safety Officer), the ISAT Chemical/Biochemical Hygiene & Laboratory Equipment Safety Plan is the property of the ISAT program. The Department of Chemistry will assume no liability resulting from the adaptation of its plan by the ISAT Chemical Hygiene and Safety Officer.

The purpose of the ISAT Chemical/Biochemical Hygiene & Laboratory Equipment Safety Plan is to establish procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment and work practices that will protect employees, students, and visitors to ISAT laboratories from health hazards presented by hazardous chemicals and laboratory equipment. All laboratory workers-faculty, staff and students of ISAT-should be given ready access to this plan. In addition, visitors to any ISAT laboratory will be offered a copy for their perusal, if requested.
