Hazard Identification

Stockroom personnel who unpack and distribute incoming chemicals should ensure that labels on containers of hazardous chemicals are not removed or defaced.

The Chemistry Department will maintain material safety data sheets that accompany incoming shipments of hazardous chemicals in the stockroom and make the MSDS readily accessible to employees.

Laboratory-Generated Chemical Substances:

  1. If the composition of a chemical produced exclusively for the laboratory's use is known, available hazard information will be provided to employees exposed to the substance.
  2. If the chemical produced is a byproduct whose composition is not known, the substance should be assumed to be hazardous and handled according to the CHP.
  3. If the chemical substance is produced for another user outside of the laboratory, the laboratory shall comply with the Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) including the requirements for preparation of material safety data sheets and labeling.
