James Madison University's Posture Toward Responsible Environmental Practices

Following is an overview of JMU's management of Hazardous Materials and Toxic Waste (hereon referred to as Haz/Mat). At JMU only those hazardous and toxic chemicals and materials that are needed for academic use in the reasonably foreseeable future are ordered "just in time." We no longer stock pile such items in laboratory storeroom inventory for long periods of time. As much as possible, such chemicals and materials not totally expended in laboratory processes that can be neutralized on site are so neutralized. Recoverables and Recyclables are sent to licensed and certified recovery and recycling specialists. The aforementioned practices have dramatically minimized the need for hazardous waste transport to and disposal in EPA approved off campus sites. The handling of Hazardous Materials and Toxic Waste (Haz/Mat) is a continuing effort taken very seriously at James Madison University. All of our toxic waste is transported by Federally licensed and approved carriers. All of our shipments are filed under the authorization two EPA issued Identification Numbers, VADO77929198 (east of South Main St., Route US 11) and VAD982677262 (west of South Main St.). The current Haz/Mat licensed and certified carrier for JMU is:
