Workplace Safety Health Guidelines Survey Points
The Safety Officer continuously schedules and makes Safety and Health Surveys throughout the campus. The purpose of the survey is to identify conditions that can be corrected, and to eliminate or minimize employee and student exposure to injury and or unhealthful conditions.
The following guidelines are utilized in making Safety and Health Surveys throughout the campus area:
- Building and Premises
- Are walkways properly marked and cleared?
- Are exterior walkways cleared and in good repair?
- Are floor holes, floor openings, wall openings, and skylights guarded?
- Are gratings, non-skid mats, or other non-slip materials used in wet hazardous areas?
- Are gratings, mats, etc. in good repair?
- Are open-sided floors, platforms, and runways which are four feet or more above grade level, guarded and provided with toe boards?
- Are hatchways, manholes, etc., protected with toe boards?
- Do railways and toe boards meet standards and are they in good repair?
- Are elevated load bearing floors and roofs posted with safe load limit signs?
- Illumination
- Is lighting in work and storage areas adequate?
- Is lighting in non-work areas adequate?
- Are emergency and explosion-proof lighting systems adequate?
- Is temporary lighting adequate and properly guarded?
- Stair and Stairways
- Are stairs, elevator landings, and fire escapes clean and in good repair?
- Are handrails and guardrails adequate and surfaces non-slippery?
- Ladders and Scaffolds
- Are ladders equipped with safety feet?
- Are ladders in good condition?
- Are precautions taken not to use metal ladders if there is electric shock hazard?
- Ventilation
- Any accumulation of smoke, fumes, or dust?
- Is the temperature and the air movement in work areas satisfactory?
- Life Safety
- Are there at least two fire emergency exits for each work area?
- Are the exits properly marked and illuminated?
- Is exit route clear and unobstructed?
- Do exit doors open in direction of exit?
- Are exit doors equipped with panic hardware and no other locks?
- Fire Suppression Equipment
- Are portable extinguishers properly located?
- Are extinguisher located within 75 feet, maximum travel distance and in hazardous areas within 50 feet maximum travel distance?
- Are extinguishers tagged and their service up-to-date?
- Is the proper type extinguishing equipment available for hazards in the area?
- Is a 36 inch clearance maintained between sprinkler deflectors and the top of stored material?
- Do fire hoses appear to be in good condition?
- Are manual fire alarms accessible within 200 feet travel distance?
- Are sources of support for fires such as gases, vapors, fumes, and dust adequately controlled?
- Electrical Wiring and Equipment
- Are entrances to electrical stations, transformer rooms, etc., posted as "RESTRICTED AREAS?"
- Are extension cords and temporary wiring free from breaks and defects?
- Do all wiring systems have grounded conductors? Are they identified?
- Is electrical equipment operation at 50 to 600 volts protected against accidental contact?
- Are insulation mats and protective gear available in areas where the voltage to ground exceeds 150?
- Is there access and working space around all electrical equipment?
- Are outlet boxes provided with adequate covers?
- Are disconnect instructions attached to electric motors and appliances?
- Are portable power tools all equipped with hand control switches which must be held in the closed position?
- Are electric hand tool cables in good condition?
- Are enclosed motors suitable for use in locations where dust collects?
- Have provisions been made to prevent accumulation of gas in battery rooms?
- Boilers, Heating & Cooling Equipment
- Is the Boiler room clean and is ventilation adequate?
- Is the boiler room fire door kept closed?
- Are "salamanders" or other unapproved heaters in use?
- Pressure Vessels - Piping
- Are accessible steam and hot water pipes covered or guarded to prevent contact?
- Are piping systems color-coded?
- Elevators
- Re-inspection certificates and capacity plates posted in the cars?
- Are freight elevators guarded against passenger use?
- Sanitation
- Are toilet facilities and dressing rooms clean and adequate?
- Are drinking fountains adequate?
- Is the lunchroom clean and food properly stored?
- Are vending machines clean and provided with waste receptacles?
- Medical Facilities
- Are first aid supplies adequate?
