Power (Steam) Plant

  1. All work shall be performed consistent with the ASME "Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code", specifically Section VII, "Recommended Guidelines for the Care of Power Boilers. The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company has prepared, "The Care and Operation of Power Boilers", which is also a part of the Power Plant's operating procedures.

  2. Be familiar with and follow general safety, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, and standard operating procedures for each piece of equipment. See NOTE on page 15 of this Manual.

  3. Welding equipment shall only be used by trained associates. Welding shall be performed in designated areas. See the appropriate sections of this manual. Areas shall be free of flammables and properly ventilated. Appropriate PPE shall be worn.

  4. Do not work on live steam or hot water lines before securing cut off valves.

  5. Report all safety discrepancies/violations or accidents to the Lead Operator or Plant Supervisor. Log all discrepancies in operations log. Take immediate action to correct any discrepancies or violations and record the action taken in the log.

  6. Store all flammables in their proper containers and away from flames or heat.

  7. Keep work areas clean and uncluttered. Dispose of oily rags properly.

  8. Prior to placing any piece of equipment in operation, ensure that all safety devices, alarms, monitoring devices and coupling guards are installed and operational.

  9. Inspect oil and gas lines routinely for leaks. Keep oil spills wiped up.

  10. Do not work on any pressurized or energized system, vessel, or equipment.

  11. The following precaution shall be taken when sampling, testing, or treating boiler water and when handling chemicals:

    1. Know the location of the MSDS book and how to read an MSDS. Be familiar with guidelines stated on MSDS for chemicals being handled. Conduct a chemical inventory each year in September (Refer to the FM Hazard Communication Procedure, I:12). Handle all chemicals with rubber gloves, face, and eye protection.

    2. PPE shall be worn when mixing chemicals or adding chemicals to the treatment tank, i.e. face shield, rubber gloves, apron, etc..

    3. Know the location and operation of eye wash stations.

    4. A face shield and safety glasses shall be worn when drawing boiler water, feedwater, or condensate return samples.

  12. Report all accidents to your supervisor immediately.
