Procedures for the Approval of Helicopter Operations
All helicopter landings on the JMU campus require the approval of the director of public safety. Except in cases of emergency, a written application (email is acceptable) for landing approval must be made to the director at least two weeks prior to the landing. At a minimum, the landing request should contain the following information:
- The date, time and place of departure inbound to JMU;
- The estimated time in route and estimated time of arrival (ETA) at JMU;
- Any alternate arrival airport and telephone number (if known);
- The outbound destination and ETA;
- The destination contact and telephone number;
- The type and color of aircraft, identification number (if known), any special equipment and its specific arrival/departure requirements;
- The name of the organization or company to which the aircraft belongs and its home base;
- The name(s), address(es) and telephone number(s) of the pilot(s);
- The sponsoring university office/department and the purpose for the flight;
- Divisional approval for the flight - college and/or departmental approvals as required;
- The number of people on board at arrival and any of those not departing with the aircraft;
- The names of the individuals to be transported (passenger manifest);
- The type (AVJET or AVGAS) and estimated amount of fuel on board; and
- A flight plan indicating the route of the flight, whether operating under a local or cross-country flight plan, flying VFR or IFR and at what operational or cruising altitude.
If the request is approved, the director of public safety will issue the approval in writing and convey the approved location of the arrival/departure and any necessary operational parameters.
