What is CTLT?
A unique hands-on leadership experience awaits some cadets after completing
Advance Camp. Volunteers who are selected for Cadet Troop Leadership Training
(CTLT) are sent to an active duty unit for three weeks of orientation
into the life of an Army officer. Cadets are normally assigned to a platoon
leader to learn the day to day duties, and will be required to perform
some of those duties by the end of the assignment.
It is an excellent opportunity for cadets to look at active
duty military life prior to submitting their branching and assignment
requests to the Department of the Army at the beginning of their senior
year. Cadets can specifically request a specialty or regional area they
are interested in. It is also an excellent opportunity to travel - some
of the CTLT assignments are overseas!
What Should I Know About CTLT as a Cadet?
CTLT is your opportunity to see what an actual Army unit is like before
deciding what branch you'd like to serve in. Much of your experience depends
on what unit you go to, as well as what your commander is life. For many
cadets, CTLT is an awesome experience where they are given control of
a platoon and advised how to lead them by the current platoon leader.
Other cadets simply accompany the current officer leadership as they learn
the ropes of the unit. As with much else in ROTC, CTLT is largely what
you make of it.
Who Can I Talk to About CTLT?
Many rising MS IV's have completed CTLT. Each was sent to a different
unit and location, so speak with each of them if you are interested in
getting a well-rounded opinion of CTLT.
