Leaders Training Course

What is Leaders Training Course (Basic Camp)?
LTC is an intensive 5 week training experience for college students who either need credit for the first two years of ROTC or want to investigate a military leadership experience.

LTC is the Army’s 2-year ROTC Program entry point. Through LTC, students without ROTC Basic Course experience can examine the Army without incurring an obligation, and qualify for Advanced Course entry. The Army observes these students and determines their officer potential in a leadership oriented, challenging, and motivating 5-week training program.

This year, Basic Camp is also being called a "Leadership Internship". It gives students with at least 54 credit hours a chance to experience military training and help build their resume. They incur no obligation and are not required to join ROTC upon their return to campus - however that option is open to them.

The camp philosophy is based on an action-oriented training plan. Emphasis is hands on, outdoor training with rapid, constructive feedback to the cadet. Above all else, LTC is a leadership experience. The training program is designed to inspire students to become outstanding leaders with a sound understanding of traditional leadership values. At LTC, students are trained to lead and develop their officer leadership potential.

Additionally, many 2-year scholarships are awarded at LTC. Those who perform well and demonstrate the leadership potential and qualities that the Army is looking for in officers, will be offered 2-year, full-tuition scholarships to take back with them to campus.

What Should I Know About LTC as a Cadet?
This is the transition course for college students, teaching them the in's and out's of military life. As aforementioned, LTC can be attended instead of taking MSCI 101, 102, 201, and 202. This allows someone interested in ROTC to catch up with their peers who have taken the class for two years and still wish to graduate on time. Each year, James Madison University sends between five and ten cadets to LTC. LTC is generally considered to be fairly easy, and almost everyone who has attended from JMU the past few years has been offered a full two year ROTC scholarship.

Who Can I Talk to About LTC?
The JMU Cadre will be able to answer any further questions. They can also help you to enroll in LTC and apply for scholarships.
