Airborne School

What is Airborne School?
The US Army Airborne School is at the US Army Infantry Center, Ft. Benning Georgia. This course is designed to train soldiers to become paratroopers. It develops the student's confidence through repetitious training so that the student can overcome the natural fear of jumping from an airplane; develop and maintain the high level of physical fitness required of a paratrooper, by rigorous and progressive physical training. Each student must satisfactorily complete 5 jumps from an aircraft while in flight.

What Should I Know About Airborne School as a Cadet?
This is the most popular Army school open to cadets. Each year, James Madison University sends between five and ten cadets to earn their "jump wings." Airborne School is a 3 week course, consisting of three phases; Ground Week, Tower Week, and Jump Week. Airborne is considered a fairly physical course involving 5 mile runs for PT in extreme heat; however, there is lots of downtime and it not thought to be a difficult course by those cadets who have graduated it.

Who Can I Talk to About Airborne School?
Many JMU ROTC cadets have successfully completed Airborne School, as well as some of our cadre. Anytime you see someone with a patch that looks like the patch below, ask them if you can have a few minutes of their time.
