Lieutenant Colonel Tom Tolman is currently assigned as Professor of Military Science and Head of the Department of Military Science within the College of Education at James Madison University.  A native of Rockville, Maryland, LTC Tolman was commissioned in 2001 as a Signal Officer after graduating from the United States Military Academy.  Prior to entering West Point, Tom initially began his military service by enlisting as a combat engineer and enrolling in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).


Tom’s first assignment as a lieutenant was to the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) where he deployed as a platoon leader to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and then to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  Following these deployments, he served on the staff of the 82nd Airborne Division where, among other things, he helped manage the Division’s response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  After a year on staff, he stood up and commanded a new signal company within the 82nd and deployed to Iraq during what would later be called “the surge.”
After this deployment, he served as the Southeast Regional Commander for Admissions at the United States Military Academy responsible for recruiting and enrolling cadets in seven states from Maryland to Florida as well as all international cadets.  While on West Point staff, LTC Tolman served as a coach for the West Point Marathon Team.


Following the assignment at West Point, LTC Tolman returned to Fort Bragg where he commanded the Theater Signal Support Company in USASOC responsible for joint communications support for Special Operations leadership throughout the world.  He then served as the Operations Officer for the Sustainment Brigade responsible for the signal, logistical and medical support of USASOC.  In 2014, LTC Tolman was selected to serve as an Exchange Officer and served on the British Army staff where he led projects relating to the interoperability of communications equipment between the U.S. and British armies.


LTC Tolman holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Information Systems from George Washington University and is a graduate of Command and General Staff College.  He has been awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and various other awards.  He has completed several military schools including Air Assault, Airborne, Jumpmaster, and the Combat Diver’s Qualification Course.


LTC Tom Tolman is married to Erin Sheely and they have two daughters and two sons.
