Major Brian D. Costa assumed duties as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at James Madison University on April 1, 2015. Major Costa is a native of Norwell, Massachusetts, and graduated from Norwich University in VT with a BS in chemistry. 

His most recent assignment was serving at FT Drum, NY as the Battalion Executive Officer for the 210th Brigade Support Battalion and as the Brigade Logistics Officer (S4) for 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. 

Major Costa’s first combat tour in 2006 was as a Forward Support Company Commander in 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division out of FT Hood, TX. After his 12 month tour in Iraq he PCSed to FT Knox, KY where he activated and served as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company Commander for the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command and deployed to Iraq in 2009 for another 15 months. His command was over 500 soldiers that focused on theater level logistics. After the deployment Major Costa and the 3rd ESC supported humanitarian assistance efforts in Haiti after the earthquake in 2010. 
Major Costa then served as the 10th Sustainment Brigade Deputy Support Operations officer out of FT Drum, NY during the surge into Afghanistan in 2011. He assisted with the management of logistics across three regional commands in theater. On his last deployment to Afghanistan as the Brigade Logistics officer (S4) for 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division in 2013 he was responsible for the retrograde of Soldiers, contractors, equipment and ammunition from Paktika Province and transitioning it to the Afghan Army. 

Major Costa’s awards and decorations include four Bronze Star Medals, three Meritorious Service Medals, the two Army Commendation Medals, a Joint Service Achievement Medal, six Army Achievement Medals, two Meritorious Unit Citations and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
