Meet the Clubs

Fencing

Info:

Our mission is to bring the sport of fencing to any student who is interested in learning in a fun, exciting, and athletic atmosphere. This club has about 35 members. We do several outside-of-practice events! Although fencing is an individual sport - we try to cultivate the team spirit whenever possible.

  • President  Robert Merther mertherf@dukes.jmu.edu
  • Vice President  Christiaan Firmani firmancj@dukes.jmu.edu
  • Treasurer  Kathryn Wendelken wendelkt@dukes.jmu.edu
  • Secretary  Devan Maddox maddoxdr@dukes.jmu.edu

We attend a Southern Atlantic Conference - which is a single collegiate team tournament. But in fencing, tournaments are run by the USFA and divided into state divisions. We compete in the Virginia Division. The number of tournaments attended by our members is really up to them. USFA tournaments are individual tournaments that some of our membership attend. We do go as a team to 2-3 team tournaments a school year, which are very exciting. Also - fencing is indoors, so it is done year round.

No try-outs. We'd love to teach as many students as we can. Membership requirements include only an interest in fencing, willingness to learn, and a bit of tolerance for weirdness. There is a $50 membership fee.  If fencers are interested in attending USFA tournaments - USFA membership costs 60$ annually and a 20$ entry fee per tournament. We attend other tournaments that club members do not have to pay for.

Practice schedule is Monday and Wednesday from 7 - 10 PM for advanced fencers and Tuesday and Thursday from 7 - 9 for beginner fencers.
