UREC Intramural Sport Descriptions & Rules

Whether you have played this sport in the past, or want to try a new sport, learn everything you need to know about the sports UREC offers for intramural competition!

Battleship

Battleship is a very exciting one-time/year Intramural Special Event to be held in the Spring Semester in the UREC Pool. Teams are comprised of 4 people. Each person must have a bucket and shields are optional. Teams of 4 will get into a canoe and the goal is to fill up other teams canoes with water to ‘sink their ship’. Battleship Rules

Basketball (3-on-3 Outdoor)

Games are played on the outdoor basketball courts at University Park with teams of 3 and a minimum of 2 to begin play. Games are self-officiated and will be played on the half-court. Forfeit bond: $10. 3-on-3 Basketball Rules

Basketball (5-on-5)

Games are played in both the UREC Gym and Godwin Gym. Teams must have a minimum of 4 players to begin play. All games will be officiated. Forfeit bond: $30. 5-on-5 Basketball Rules

Boccer

Boccer is a fast-paced blend of soccer and basketball. It is played in the MAC gym with teams of 5 players with a minimum of 4 to begin play. The game will switch back and forth between ‘soccer-mode’ and ‘basketball-mode’ depending on how the ball is played. Games will have one sport official. Dodgeball

Games are played in the UREC MAC gym. Teams must have a minimum of 5 to begin play and can play with 6. Games will be scheduled on the half hour. There will be a running clock of 20 minutes. Teams will play as many games of dodgeball possible in 20 minutes. The team with the most wins at the end of 20 minutes is the winner. There will be an official present. Field Hockey

Games are played on the ISAT Field Hockey Turf with teams of 7 with a minimum of 5 to begin play. Mouth guards are required, shin guards are recommended, and UREC will provide field hockey sticks and field hockey balls. All games will be officiated. Forfeit bond: $30. Field Hockey Rules

Flag Football (4-on-4)

Games are played on the UREC Upper Turf with teams of 4 with a minimum of 3 to begin play. Shorts or pants with any pockets, belt loops, or zippers are prohibited during play. Flag football is a non-contact sport. 4-on-4 Flag Football is a half-field version of 7-on-7 flag football. All games will be officiated. Forfeit bond: #30. 4-on-4 Flag Football Rules

Flag Football (7-on-7)

Games are played on the UREC Upper Turf with teams of 7 for men’s/women’s leagues (minimum: 5) and 8 for CoRec (minimum: 6). Shorts or pants with any pockets, belt loops, or zippers are prohibited during play. Flag football is a non-contact sport. All games will be officiated. Forfeit bond: $30. 7-on-7 Flag Football Rules

Floor Hockey

Games are played in the Godwin Gym with teams of 6 with a minimum of 5 to begin play. UREC provides goalie equipment, sticks, and floor hockey balls. Athletic shoes are required for play. All games will be officiated. Forfeit bond: $30. Floor Hockey Rules

Team Handball

Games are played in Godwin Gym. Teams must have at least 5 players to begin play, and they can play with a maximum of 6 on the court. Team Handball combines the elements of soccer, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, and water polo. The objective of the game is to out-maneuver the opponent by passing the ball quickly and then throwing the ball past the defense and goalkeeper to score. UREC provides all equipment. All games will be officiated. Forfeit bond: $30. Team Handball Rules

Innertube Water Polo

Games are played in the UREC Pool. Teams must have at least 5 players to begin play, and they may play with a maximum of 6 in the pool. CoRec is the only division offered. Innertube Water Polo is a fun, exciting sport where players are sitting upright in an innertube playing water polo with a water polo ball. The goal is to score by throwing the ball into the other team’s goal (similar to soccer). Players must move around the pool by paddling while in their innertube. Tubes and the water polo ball will be provided by UREC. Lifeguards will be on duty and there will be an official present. Forfeit bond: $30. Innertube Water Polo Rules

Kickball

Games will be played on the East Campus Lower Field. Teams must have a minimum of 6 players for play to begin and can play with a maximum of 8 players. The sport is self-officiated, but there will be a site manager present to keep score and time. Forfeit bond: $10. Kickball Rules

Racquetball

Games are played in the UREC Racquetball courts ideally. The racquetball league is structured as a play-on-your-own league meaning that the intramural staff sets up a tentative game schedule as an idea for the participants and the participants contact their opponent to set up the time/date or the match. Participants report scores to the intramural staff and records are kept until playoff season. Forfeit bond: $10. Racquetball Rules

Sand Volleyball (4-on-4)

Games will be played on the sand volleyball courts at University Park (2 courts). Teams must have a minimum of 3 to begin play, and can play with a maximum of 4 players. Games will be the best two out of three sets, rally scoring. The first two sets will be to 21, and the third, if needed, set will be to 15. A site manager or official will be present to keep score. Forfeit bond: $10. Sand Volleyball Rules

Soccer (Indoor)

Games are played in the UREC MAC gym and in Godwin Gym. Teams must play with a maximum of 5 players on the court and a minimum of 4 players to begin play in the UREC MAC gym. In Godwin Gym, teams must have a minimum of 5 players to begin play, and can play with a maximum of 6 players. All games will be officiated. There are no offsides in these leagues. Forfeit bond: $30. Indoor Soccer Rules

Soccer (Outdoor)

Outdoor Turf Soccer games are played on the University Park Turf (3 fields) and Outdoor Grass Soccer games are played on the East Campus Lower Field (2 fields). Teams must play with a maximum of 9 on the field and a minimum of 7 to begin play. All games will be officiated. There are no offsides in these leagues. Forfeit bond: $30. Outdoor Soccer Rules

Softball

Games will be played on the University Park Turf and the UREC Upper Turf. Teams must have a minimum of 8 to begin play and a maximum of 10 plays in the field. However, Men’s/Women’s leagues can bat 11 players and CoRec leagues can bat 12 players. Players must provide their own gloves. All other equipment will be provided by UREC (softballs, bats, etc.). All games will be umpired. Forfeit bond: $30. Softball Rules

Street Hockey

Games will be played at the UREC Hillside Hockey Courts with teams of 6 with a minimum of 5 to begin play. Rollerblades are not allowed in this sport. Athletic shoes are required for play. UREC provides goalie equipment, sticks, and street hockey balls. All games will be officiated. Forfeit bond: #30. Street Hockey Rules

Table Tennis

Games are played on the UREC Table Tennis tables ideally. The table tennis league is structured as a play-on-your-own league meaning that the intramural staff sets up a tentative game schedule as an idea for the participants and the participants contact their opponent to set up the time/date or the match. Participants report scores to the intramural staff and records are kept until playoff season. Forfeit bond: $10. Table Tennis Rules

Track and Field Meet

The Meet will be held at the ISAT Track. This is a one-time/year Intramural Special Event to be held in the spring semester. Equipment will be provided by UREC. There is not a forfeit bond for this event. Track and Field Rules

Ultimate Frisbee

Games are played on the East Campus Lower Field (2 fields). Teams must play with a maximum of 7 on the field and minimum of 6 to begin play. All games are self-officiated with a site manager present to keep score and time. Discs are provided by UREC for play. Forfeit bond: $10. Ultimate Frisbee Rules

Volleyball

Games are played in the Godwin Gym. Teams must play with a maximum of 6 on the court and a minimum of 4 to start play. All games will be officiated. Volleyballs will be provided by UREC for play. Games are best two out of three sets. All sets are rally scoring with the first two being to 25 and the third, if needed, game to 15. Forfeit bond: $30. Volleyball Rules

Whiffleball

Games are played in the Godwin Gym. Teams must play with a maximum of 8 players and have a minimum of 6 players to begin play. Games will have an official present. Whiffleball bats and whiffleballs will be provided by UREC for play. Gloves are not allowed. Forfeit bond: $30. Whiffleball Rules
