Competition Levels

Competitive League (Men’s Independent/Women’s Independent/CoRec)
Some of our sports will differentiate between competitive and recreational leagues. The Competitive league is designed for teams whose primary objective is to win games. Players in this league generally have play high school varsity sports and remain active in that sport. This level will consist of pool play, concluding with playoffs. Teams must have a 3.0 sportsmanship average to advance to playoffs. The playoff structure will be divided into A and B playoff brackets. Any team that completes the regular season with a record of better than or equal to .500 will compete in the Competitive A playoffs, and teams with less than a .500 record will compete in the Competitive B playoffs. The Intramural Sports Staff reserves the right to put a team in a higher bracket if the team is deemed to be losing on purpose.

Recreational League (Men’s Independent/Women’s Independent/CoRec)
Some of our sports will differentiate between competitive and recreational leagues. The Recreational league is designed for teams whose primary objective is to enjoy Intramural Sports and to have fun; winning is secondary. Most players on these teams have not played at the varsity level and may be slightly active in the sport. Most teams that have never played together before or are first-time participants are better suited to play in the Recreational league or the Resident Hall league (below). This level will consist of pool play, concluding with a single elimination playoff bracket. Teams must have a 3.0 sportsmanship average to advance to playoffs.

Resident Hall League (Men’s/Women’s)
This league is designed specifically for participants that reside on campus to develop a team of members of their given hall or building. This will be considered a "CoRec‟ league meaning that players will be allowed to play in a single-gendered league as well. Most teams that have never played together before or are first-time participants are better suited to play in the Recreational league (above) or the Resident Hall league. This level will consist of pool play, concluding with a single elimination playoff bracket. Teams must have a 3.0 sportsmanship average to advance to playoffs.

Fraternity League (Men’s)
A representative of a national social fraternity/sorority must be either an active member or a pledge, as defined for intramural purposes. An active member must be initiated, active and his/her name must appear on the current Greek rolls and on the intramural roster before he/she competes. For a pledge to represent his/her organization in intramural play he/she must comply with the following:

  • Participants name must appear on the current Greek rolls and the intramural team roster.
  • Participants signed pledge card must be filed at the Greek Council Office before he/she competes. This level will consist of pool play, concluding with a single elimination playoff bracket. Teams must have a 3.0 sportsmanship average to advance to playoffs.

Additionally, the champions will receive an automatic bid to any available regional tournament to represent JMU in Extramural Tournaments. Learn more about the National Collegiate Championship Series.
