Assistantships include enrollment in an academic program and involve a minimum of 20 hours of service per week at UREC during the academic school year. Graduate assistants will begin work prior to the start of the school year and the position continues through the end of the academic year.

Also included in all assistantship positions are responsibilities related to the supervision and operation of the University Recreation Center and satellite facilities. Some evening and weekend hours are required. All assistantships are awarded annually and may be renewed by mutual consent.

2012-13 Graduate Assistantship Positions open November 1, 2011 until filled. The following positions will be open:

  • Aquatics and Safety GA

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in related field
  • Current GRE scores
  • Formal acceptance into a graduate program (individuals may apply prior to admission, however, an individual must be accepted into a graduate program before an offer may be extended)
Stipend
  • Approximately $7,382 for the academic school year plus full tuition waiver (for a maximum of nine credit hours per semester)
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Summer employment opportunities may be available in addition to the graduate assistantship contract.

Step 1:

Apply online for admission to the Campus Recreation Leadership Graduate Degree program through the James Madison University Graduate School. Early Admission deadline is December 1 and the Regular Decision deadline is February 1.

Step 2:

Apply for a UREC Assistantship. The application includes the JMU Joblink Graduate Assistant Application, cover letter, resume, and a list of three references. You must apply online through JMU Joblink.

  • go to JMU Joblink.
  • click on "login as applicant"
  • click on "search job openings"
  • under the position type drop down menu, click on "graduate assistantship"
  • click on "search"
  • select the position you are interested in, complete and submit application.

You do not need to wait until you have been accepted to an academic program to apply for an assistantship. However, we cannot offer a position to a candidate who has not been accepted into an academic program.

Graduate Assistant for Adventure Programs
The Graduate Assistant for Adventure Programs will take on a leadership role in two of the five areas of concentration of JMU Adventure Program (trips, education, workshops, indoor climbing wall, TEAM Ropes Course, and Adventure Equipment Center) and assist in remaining three areas as needed. Other responsibilities will include planning and execution of special events, supervision of employees, program risk management, leader training, and general program administration. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Graduate Assistant for Aquatics and Safety
The Graduate Assistant for Aquatics and Safety will provide leadership to lifeguard and EMT staff. Coordinate the Learn to Swim program and supervise the Aquatic Instructor staff, assist in managing aspects of the aquatics and safety program, instruct CPR, First Aid and LGT classes, schedule all aquatics and safety classes. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Graduate Assistant for Facility Services (2)

Co-coordinate the supervision, management, hiring, training and evaluation of manager and assistant student staff. Provide leadership to Equipment Center and Member Services student staff. Assist in maintaining and managing facility services in the Equipment Center and Member Services areas: equipment issuing, facility access control, inventory control, locker and towel service management and budget processes.  Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Graduate Assistant for Fitness and Nutrition

The Graduate Assistant for Fitness/Nutrition will co-coordinate the Fitness, Personal Training, and Nutrition Programs. Responsibilities will include supervision, training, hiring and evaluation of the fitness and nutrition staff. Assist with fitness program operations, including equipment maintenance, inventory, and budget processes. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Graduate Assistant for Group Fitness and Wellness

The Graduate Assistant for Group Fitness and Wellness will coordinate Group Fitness and Wellness programs and supervise staff, as well as the UREC Massage Program. Assist with program operations including instruction of in-house group fitness training program, staff training and continuing education, budgeting and special events. Assist with hiring, evaluation and scheduling of group fitness and wellness employees. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports and Special Events
The Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports and Special Events will coordinate team sport officials training, supervision and evaluation. Provide leadership to the Intramural Sports manager staff. Coordinate selected aspects of program planning and budget reconciliation. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Graduate Assistant for Marketing and Development

The Graduate Assistant for Marketing and Development will provide leadership and supervision of Marketing Assistant student staff. Manage the production of internal and external communication media to promote the facilities, special events, educational programs, sponsorship and/or development efforts. Plan and attend special UREC events. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Graduate Assistant for Sport Clubs and Youth Programs
The Graduate Assistant for Sport Clubs and Youth Programs will coordinate programming and scheduling of JMU’s sport club program, which includes over 40 clubs and an Executive Council. Coordinate planning and preparation of all components for UREC’s comprehensive Youth Program (including summer activity camp). Involvement in the coordination of the UREC Alternative Spring Break trip. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.
