UREC offers Wellness 101 Programs, which are introductory programs for the different aspects of Wellness. There are numerous opportunities throughout the semester to improve your understanding of personal Wellness by attending educational programs.

Drum Circle

Use drum circles to create music, relieve stress, and improve your coordination. In this class, you will learn different rhythms and techniques. From funk and soul to African and Middle-Eastern, there’s a rhythm for every mood and attitude. Join in and go free-style and come up with your own rhythms.

Wellness Passport

Self-Defense Class

This class meets once a week for 5 weeks to learn realistic self-defense techniques. Participants will practice stance and balance, striking with hands, feet, and knees, and learn how to escape in different situations. All skill levels welcome!

Dates: Tuesdays, January 17- February 14
Time: 5:15-6:15pm
Location: Godwin Combatives Room
Register atthe UREC Welcome Center to register with FLEX.
Cost: $10.00 for all 5 classes

Salsa Lessons

Learn Salsa Dance from a social dance perspective. Social dancing is perhaps the oldest and most authentic methods of dance. Social dance is developed from the appreciation of the music and the interaction of the dancers. Emphasis is based on learning to lead and to follow. You’ll be ready to hit the dance floor.

Session 1: Thursdays, Feb. 2-23
Session 2: Thursdays, Mar. 15-Apr. 5

Love Your Body

The media influences our concepts of beauty.  This interactive session and discussion will point out some ways to counter the media hype so that your unique inner beauty shines. All skill levels are welcome for this lecture-based program.

Getting Real Panel Discussion

Beauty in our culture is often defined by how we look on the outside.  Join this panel discussion with women on JMU's campus to understand their personal stories on body image and self image.

Couch to 5k

Join us for a 6-session program on participating and training for a 5k. Learn all of the steps from finding area 5K races to registering to completing it. The sessions include lecture and activity time to train. Wear exercise clothing and footwear and meet in the UREC Intstructional Room for your first session. Register 24 hours before the first session at the UREC Program Registration Desk using FLEX.

Stress Management 101

College life can be stressful.  Find out how you can deal with it. All skill levels are welcome for this lecture-based program. Come prepared to learn strategies to reduce and manage stress.

You are unique. Join this basic dance class where you get to move your body your way. No one cares how you look!  So join us as you find your unique groove. Students attending this event are encouraged to bring jeans to donate to First Step. Learn more about The Groove Method!
