If you are looking to take the intramural experience to the next level, than the Student Officials Association is the organization for you! Through this experience, you will officiate a variety of sports that are offered throughout the academic year.  You will learn certain skills, such as managing a facility, enforcing sport rules and regulations, ensuring safety for all participants, and utilizing conflict resolution skills. This experience will be challenging, but will offer an opportunity for you to grow as a professional. SOA

Join the Student Officials Association

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Student Officials Association and would like to officiate for the UREC Intramural Sports Program, you will need to complete the following two steps:

  1. Apply for the Sport Official’s position on JMU Joblink.  Please keep in mind that this position will vary with sport demand, so the positing may be labeled Flag Football Official or Soccer Official.After applying for this position it is suggested that you follow up with Aaron Combs or Taylor Book (contact information below) by emailing your interest.

  2. After the interview process, you will be required to attend all clinics that pertain to the sports. The majority of the sports have three mandatory clinics.

After finishing the hiring process you become a non-active member of the Student Officials Association.  The descriptions of non-active members and active members can be located in the Member Benefits section below.

Member Benefits (Download PDF)

Non-Active Members Benefits
(Non-Active Members are officials who have not been invited to join the SOA)

  1. Officiate all intramural contests
  2. Eligible for Student Officials Association Incentive Program
    • No exception  to receiving extra points
  3. Eligible for officiating community games, sport club events, fraternity/sorority events, extramural tournaments after all active members are scheduled
  4. Not required to attend monthly meetings

Active Member Benefits
(Active Members are officials who have been invited to join the SOA and pay the $30.00 yearly Membership Fee)

  1. Officiate all intramural contests
  2. Eligible for Student Officials Association Incentive Program
    • Officials will receive 1.5 incentive points for each intramural game officiated
    • Officials will receive 2.5 incentive points for each community game, sport club event, fraternity/sorority event, or extramural tournament officiated
  3. Eligible for officiating community games, sport club events, fraternity/sorority events, extramural tournaments. Active members will receive first priority to these events
  4. Officials will receive the official t-shirt for the Student Officials Association
  5. Officials will receive an officials jersey and the official Student Officials Patch
  6. Active members are required to attend monthly meetings. (Approximately 1 hour in length)
  7. After a year, active members can apply for a certification or professional development grant.

Active Member Requirements

  1. Pay $30 yearly membership fee.
  2. Actively officiate intramural sports. In order for officials to be actively officiating intramural sports, officials need to officiate a minimum of 2 shifts a week.
  3. Officials will need to officiate a minimum of 1 community league and 1 tournament a year.
  4. Officials will need to participate in the organization and implementation of all fundraising events.
