Yellow Cards
Yellow cards are a tool that soccer officials have to regulate play. They are used as a warning to the players for either their actions or their behavior. Learn how and when to issue the yellow card.
Yellow Cards
Yellow cards are used by officials to caution players for dangerous or reckless play, unsportsmanlike behavior, or infractions of the rules. Any official on the field may issue a yellow card. The carded player will be removed from play for 2 minutes. The carded team will play short-handed until the penalty has expired or the team has been scored upon.
A player that receives two yellow cards in one game will be issued a red card and ejected for the remainder of the match. A team receiving three unsportsmanlike penalties will forfeit the match, regardless of the score.
Sliding
Any player that slides will receive an automatic yellow card. There is absolutely no sliding. Players may not slide tackle, slide for a shot, slide to defend against a shot, or slide with no one around the play.
This rule is specific to indoor soccer at Northeastern - it must be constantly enforced. At every Captains meeting, the Lead official will address this issue and warn both team captains that sliding is not allowed.
Goal Keepers
Goalies may come out at the ball, hands first, provided that they are not reckless or playing in a dangerous manner.
Keepers that slide feet first will be issued an automatic yellow card.
Contact on a Slide
If a sliding player makes excessive or dangerous contact with another player - a red card must be issued and the player ejected.
Yellow Card for Dissent
Yellow cards may be used to regulate unacceptable language or behavior.
None of the players are allowed to argue with the officials overcalls or non-calls. Only the designated team captain may confer with an official. The captain may not argue the call - only request an explanation or rule interpretation.
Dissent by action would be a players attempt to "show-up" or embarrass an official through physical gestures.
Only Captain's May Confer with Officials:
At the Captains Meeting, a player from each team will be designated as the Captain. This player will wear an arm band for the entire game and may not be replaced. This team member will serve as the liaison between the officials and their team.
The Captain is the only member of the team that is allowed to confer and address the officials. Any of the other players that question a call or address the officials must be yellow carded. This is a rule specific to Northeastern Intramurals.
Red Card Dissent:
Sometimes a player's actions or words in protesting a call may go from cautionable to ejectable. If a player swears, threatens, taunts or baits an official or another player, the offender must be ejected with a red card.
Yellow Cards for Reckless Play
No players may act or play in a reckless or dangerous manner. The officials must regulate excessive contact, or persistent infractions of the rules, with yellow cards.
These type of plays include:
• Sliding
• Deliberate Foul
• Deliberate handling of the ball
• Playing the ball while on the ground
• High Kick
• Tripping
• Pushing or holding an opponent
• Anything deemed unsafe, reckless or dangerous
YELLOW CARDS FOR RULE INFRACTIONS
Some players are cautioned for not following the rules or for delaying the proper procedures of the game.
Offensive players must still remain outside of the goal area on corner kicks until the ball is in the box.
These Cautions include:
• Delaying a restart
• Entering the field without the official's permission
• Encroaching on a restart
• Excessive celebration of a goal
• Removing a jersey or arm-band without permission
• Continual infractions of the rules
• Failure to comply with the official's instructions
• Too many players on the field
