New to Group Fitness?
UREC offers level 1 programs for those who are new to this type of group fitness class and/or exercise programs. Also, many group fitness classes during the second and third weeks of each semester are "101 Programs" and will instruct focusing on the basics to the class. Many serve as an introduction to weekly group fitness classes.

Are you a Group Fitness Veteran?
Try some of our more challenging level 2 & 3 programs and consider applying to be a Group Fitness Instructor!

Stretching 101

Any balanced workout plan includes flexibility training.  Learn how to effectively stretch each muscle group of your body. Intended for those who want to learn how to incorporate stretching into their fitness regimen. Please dress in comfortable athletic attire.

Dance for the HEALTH of it….to live DRUMS!  This will be a dance class like you have never experienced.  GROOVE ® is a revolutionary approach to group exercise classes that focuses on teaching simple movements so everybody can be successful.

Equinox Yoga Class

The equinox occurs twice a year when night and day are approximately equal in length. Come to this Yoga class to learn more about the equinox as well as embrace the sun and moon salutations. All fitness levels welcome.

Outdoor Yoga

Take yoga in the serene setting of the Arboretum. Connect to yourself and to your surroundings. In case of inclement weather, class will be cancelled. Yoga mats are available in the Equipment Center for you to check out prior to class time. Intended for those who are familiar with this type of group fitness class and have some experience with exercise programs. Register by the day of the program.

Senior Send-off

Join us in celebrating with the Group Fitness Instructors who will graduate. A fun class is in store! All skill levels welcome.

Cycle 101

Pedal your way through various terrain in the cycle studio. Learn how to set up your bike to fit you. Experience various drills used in Cycle. All skill levels are welcome to participate. We highly encourage you to wear spandex bottoms or cycle shorts. Please wear athletic shoes if you don't have cycle shoes.

First Step

V-step. Turn step. Basic. What do these mean? Come to Step 101 to find out. Intended for those with no stepping experience. Expect basic choreography. Athletic attire required.

Yoga 101

Begin your journey to well-being and stress-relief by experiencing Sun Salutations and standard poses used in Yoga classes. Intended for those with little or no yoga experience. Dress comfortably, however we recommend thick leggings, spandex pants, or Yoga pants. No shoes.

Fit JMU

Join the biggest Group Fitness class at JMU! Experience several types of Group Fitness classes: Cardio Craze, Kickboxing, and Worldbeat Dance! All skill levels welcome. Please dress in athletic attire and athletic shoes. This class will make you sweat!

The Yogi Lifestyle

Yoga is more than just poses. It is a philosophy. Learn about the Yamas and Niyamas and how to incorporate them into your daily life. Come prepared for some movement and be sure to dress comfortably. All skill levels welcome.
