WORKOUT TO WATT HOURS: TRANSFORM YOUR EXERCISE TO ELECTRICITY
As part of JMU’s commitment to environmental stewardship, 10 of UREC's PreCors have been equipped with a device to produce renewable energy in the form of electrical energy from your motion energy.
Learn more about the ReRev system here.
More electricity generated here means less non-renewable energy use, such as coal in power plants, and much less environmental impact. It takes a lot of exercise to generate just a small amount of electricity for UREC. Our goal is to generate 1600 kilowatt hours of electricity this academic year. Come back often. Tell your friends. |
MAKE STRIDES TOWARD A HEALTHIER PLANET
- A 1-hour PreCor workout produces between 50-100 watt hours of electricity. That is enough energy to run a laptop for 1 hour or a hair dryer for six minutes.
- If a single PreCor is operated for an 8 hour day, it might produce 1000 watt hours (also know as 1 kilowatt hour) of energy. That is 8.5 cents worth of electricity. An average house in the US uses 25 kilowatt hours of electricity a day.
EXERCISE YOUR ABILITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE ALL THE TIME
Energy conservation takes minimal effort compared to working out and makes a large, positive contribution to our environment, our health, and our electricity bills. Simply,
- turn off lights, computers, computer monitors, and any electronics when not in use
- buy appliances with the highest Energy Star rating
- turn the thermostat up in summer and down in winter
- walk, bike or take the bus in lieu of driving
- or eat local foods and drink tap water.
