Sustainability at UREC

UREC supports the JMU community's pursuit of sustainability, environmental stewardship and a broader sense of citizenship. We aim to make environmentally responsible choices in regards to our facilities and processes.

How Can UREC Participants Make an Impact?

» Recycle used water bottles in one of
the many receptacles in UREC.

» Carpool, walk, run, take a bus or ride a bike to UREC when possible as opposed to driving alone. Not only is it better for the environment, you can incorporate it into your workout!

» Learn the broad spectrum of recyclable
materials on the JMU campus.

» Check out The JMU X-Map to measure the calories you burn walking to UREC with this online tool.

UREC Sustainability Initiatives

» UREC is proud to participate in Recyclemania Waste Minimization 2009.

» The Upper Turf has "Light Structure Green" lighting, which is energy-efficient and web-controlled.

» The Upper Turf's turf material is comprised of recycled rubber from the "Nike Grind" program, which recycles post-consumer athletic shoes and reuses the granulated rubber as building material.

» The Upper Turf's water runoff runs into a sand filter. The stormwater passes through the sand bed and is collected in three underdrains. This is very effective in removing sediment and bacteria from stormwater.

» For administrative work, we now use recycled paper for printing e-mails, drafts and other internal documents.

» Our student employee manuals are posted online using Blackboard as opposed to printing numerous copies.

» We aim to increase recycling of plastic bottles through provision of receptacles at all UREC program areas.

» We are working to reduce light usage through using only natural light when possible, turning off court lights when court will not be in use for an hour or more, and planning to install motion sensors in rest rooms.

» We installed 'hydration stations' that provide spickets to refill sport bottles to encourage re-use of water bottles.

» University Park, which is nearing construction, will be a LEED certified facility.

» We will keep the UREC web site up-to-date with information in hopes to lessen the need for printed communications.
