Assistantships

Assistantships include enrollment in an academic program and involve a minimum of 20 hours of service per week during the academic school year. Graduate assistants will begin work prior to the start of the school year and the position continues through the end of the academic year.

All assistantships are awarded annually and may be renewed by mutual consent.

Also included in all assistantship positions are responsibilities related to the supervision and operation of the University Recreation Center. Some evening and weekend hours are required.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in related field
  • Current GRE scores
  • Formal acceptance into a graduate program (individuals may apply prior to admission, however, an individual must be accepted into a graduate program before an offer may be expected)

Stipend:
  • Approximately $6,959 for the academic school year plus full tuition waiver (for a maximum of nine credit hours per semester)
  • Professional development opportunities
* Summer employment opportunities may be available in addition to the graduate assistantship contract.

Academics:

JMU supports graduate programs within its five colleges which include: Arts and Letters, Business, Integrated Science and Technology, Science, and Mathematics. Although JMU does not specify a graduate degree in recreation, there are several related programs offered through the College of Business, Adult Education Human Resource Development, Health Sciences and Kinesiology departments.

Adventure The Graduate Assistant for Adventure Programs will take on a leadership role in two of the five areas of concentration of JMU Adventure Program (trips, education, workshops, indoor climbing wall, TEAM Ropes Course, and Adventure Equipment Center) and assist in remaining three areas as needed. Other responsibilities will include planning and execution of special events, supervision of employees, program risk management, leader training, and general program administration. Aquatics & Safety The Graduate Assistant for Aquatics and Safety will provide leadership to lifeguard and EMT staff. Coordinate the Learn to Swim program and supervise the Aquatic Instructor staff, assist in managing aspects of the aquatics and safety program, instruct CPR, First Aid and LGT classes, schedule all aquatics and safety classes. Fitness & Nutrition The Graduate Assistant for Fitness/Nutrition will provide assistance with the day to day operations of the fitness area, including supervision, hiring, training, and evaluation of fitness assessment staff. Duties consist of administration of fitness assessments, nutritional analysis, individualized exercise prescriptions, supervision of assessment staff, and development of programming and special events for the fitness area.

Group Fitness & Wellness The Graduate Assistant for Group Fitness & Wellness will provide leadership to Group Fitness and Wellness programs and supervise staff, as well as the UREC Massage Program. Assist with program operations including instruction of in-house group fitness training program, staff training and continuing education, budgeting and special events. Assist with hiring, evaluation and scheduling of group fitness and wellness employees. Intramural Sports The Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports and Informal Recreation will coordinate team sport officials training, supervision and evaluation. Provide leadership to the Intramural Sports manager staff. Provide leadership to the Informal Recreation staff and managers. Coordinate selected aspects of program planning and budget reconciliation. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center and auxiliary facilities is required.

Marketing & Sponsorship The Graduate Assistant for Marketing and Sponsorships will provide leadership and supervision of Marketing Assistant staff. Manage internal and external publications, print media, presentations and various other communication. Coordinates, plans and develops special events and programs. Advances sponsorship efforts via proposal writing and research. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center is required.

Sport Clubs, Youth Programs This Graduate Assistant will coordinate programming and scheduling of JMU’s sport club program, which includes 33 clubs and an Executive Council. Coordinate planning and preparation of all components for UREC’s comprehensive Youth Program (including summer activity camp). Involvement in the coordination of the UREC Alternative Spring Break trip. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 140,700 sq/ft University Recreation Center is required.
