In compliance with the "Timely Notice" provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 the University Police are giving notice of a break and entry with suspected burglary or attempt  within an academic building. The continuing crime involved multiple office breaks and entries with considerable damage incurred. This occurred on the west side of campus, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The University Police responded to the Theatre II building at 1030 South Main due to a perimeter break and entry with multiple reports of forcible office break-ins.  The time span of the incidents is from late Thursday evening, July 19 to approximately 6:00a.m. Friday, July 20, 2007.

Housekeeping staff arrived at the Theatre II building at approximately 6:00a.m. Friday, July 20, 2007 and discovered the front door of the building open and glass broken out of the window next to the door.  They immediately notified the University Police.  Arriving officers first search the building for possible intruders.  Finding none they proceeded to examine and process the scene.  Discovered were multiple interior office doors kicked in.  It could not be immediately determined whether or not any items had been removed from the offices.  The building coordinator was contacted and arrived at the scene.  He determined the possibility of rifling through and tampering with files.

Members of the university community are urged to be vigilant and report any unusual circumstances and/or suspicious activities/persons.  Until this investigation has been concluded it can be assumed that conditions continue to exist that may pose a threat to members and guests of the community.  It is the duty of the institution to warn of possible "dangerous conditions" on its property; an "affirmative duty" exists to warn of possible peril at the hands of some third party.
