Letter from the Chair

From Mark J. Warner
Chair Provost Search Committee
Senior Vice President Student Affairs and University Planning

Dear Members of the JMU community,

As chair of the search committee for our new Provost, I want to provide you with an update on the search and solicit your input. Your input is very important to our committee as we begin the search for this critical position on our campus.

As you know we have secured the services of the search firm, Greenwood/Asher and Associates, Inc. to assist with this important search. The Provost position has been advertised, and we already have active candidates and nominations. I believe that we will have an outstanding and diverse pool from which to choose our next Provost.

The initial part of the search will be confidential. The committee will solicit input from the campus community to help determine the desired attributes of our next Provost. In early fall, the committee will screen applications and decide upon a short list of candidates. The committee will conduct interviews with this group, and then select finalists for on-campus interviews. The names of the finalists will be made public and copies of their CV’s will be posted. Finalists will be invited to campus in late fall. On-campus interviews will include a public forum with each candidate, to which all members of the campus community will be invited.  Our hope is to have a new provost identified by the end of the fall semester or early spring semester.

Your input is very important to the committee as we conduct our search. We would like to invite you to one of three meetings to share your input with us. The two questions we are asking are: (1) what distinct qualities and characteristics of the university and its academic programs are important to share with the candidates? and (2) what do you believe are the desired attributes of our next Provost?

Details for the three input meetings follow:

Date: September 5
Time: 4 – 5 p.m.
