The President's Council celebrated its fourth year by inviting members to campus for a reception and an overview of the new Master Plan presented by Dr. Linwood H. Rose. Approximately 70 members attended on a beautiful spring day in late April, including several young alums (JMU class of '04 or younger) and student President's Council members.
Weston Hatfield, associate vice president of development, opened the afternoon by thanking those in attendance.
As an example of the importance of members' support, Hatfield pointed to the current economic downturn and its impact on the endowment income vital to funding student scholarships. Annual giving at the President's Council level has offset losses in endowment income, allowing JMU students to continue receiving scholarship aid at this critical time.
Hatfield explained to the audience that their support would be even more important in the coming year when, as a result of the financial crisis, James Madison University will be forced to reduce scholarship payouts for the first time. Support from President's Council members will help the university to continue to provide immediate aid directly to many of the students who need it.
The JMU Master PlanNext, Dr. Rose presented the JMU Master Plan. More a conceptual concept than a blueprint for growth, the plan will help the university approach the future in a way that is visionary, thoughtful, and sustainable.
The entire plan is available to download at www.jmu.edu/planning. The plan is subject to change based on a number of factors including cost and enrollment, and implementation of some ideas may be decades away.

Following the presentation, Dr. Rose solicited questions and feedback from the President's Council members.
For those members unable to attend, the president welcomes comments and suggestions at presidentscouncil@jmu.edu.
Following the presentation, JMU student ambassadors led the way to the Leeolou Alumni Center Great Room. Conversations about the master plan continued as guests enjoyed a variety of hors d'oeuvres and beverages.

Attendees were treated with tickets to a performance by the JMU Orchestra following the reception.
