PROGRESSION IN THE POLITICAL SCIENCE, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS MAJORS AT JMU

Students wishing to major in political science, public administration or international affairs must complete four preparatory courses to progress to full major status.  We have imposed this requirement in order to ensure that our students graduate from JMU in a timely fashion.  The procedures for becoming a major for new, current and transfer students are discussed below.  Also listed are the required preparation courses.

As part of this enrollment management program, the minor in political science is suspended.  There is no minor in international affairs. The Political Communication minor and Public Policy and Administration minors are open.

All New and Current Students (including transfers)
To progress in the major, students must complete the four required preparation courses with a C or better and must have an overall 2.0 GPA. Once these courses are completed, all the student has to do is to come to the department office with an unofficial transcript and fill out a declaration of major form. All students who successfully complete the preparation courses and have a 2.0 GPA will progress to full majors.

During the initial registration period for each semester, POSC, PUAD, and INTA upper-level courses are open to full majors only. Once majors have had a chance to register then any class that is not full is opened to all students on campus meeting prerequisites.
