Charles H. Blake has been teaching political science at James Madison University since 1992. He received the A.B. magna cum laude from Davidson College in 1985 and then the Ph.D. in political science from Duke University in 1992. He directs a 9-credit summer study-abroad program in Argentina. His teaching interests include comparative politics (especially in Latin America and southern Europe), international relations, comparative public policy, and research methods. He is a member of JMU's Latin American Studies Committee and will serve as coordinator of the Latin American Studies minor during the 2007-2008 academic year. He is the coordinator of JMU's graduate certificate program in the management of international NGOs. He is also president of the Shenandoah Valley Association of Phi Beta Kappa.
His research agenda focuses primarily on political economy issues in Latin America and Europe. He has field experience at research institutes and universities in Argentina, Mexico, Spain, and Uruguay. His work has been published in Comparative Political Studies; Democratization; International Politics; Journal of Health Politics, Policy & Law; Journal of Inter-American Studies & World Affairs; The Review of International Political Economy; and Studies in Comparative International Development. His research on market-oriented economic reform in Argentina and Uruguay was funded with a fellowship from the Organization of American States. His most recent book, co-edited with Stephen Morris, examines Political Corruption in Latin America (University of Pittsburgh Press, forthcoming). He has written a textbook on Latin American politics, Politics in Latin America, for Houghton Mifflin. With JMU colleague Professor Jessica Adolino, he has co-authored a textbook on comparative public policy, Comparing Public Policies: Issues and Choices in Industrialized Countries, for Congressional Quarterly Press and they are now writing a comparative politics textbook for Wadsworth.
