Activities and Excursions

Buenos Aires is known for its architectural variety, its film and theater district, its music, and, perhaps above all, for its cafés. Over the course of the program, we will eat traditional Argentine barbecue (asado) and share in another contemporary custom that goes back to the gauchos – the drinking of tea in a hollowed out mate gourd. We will visit famous landmarks throughout the city including the government district, the multicolored architecture of La Boca, and the tango culture of San Telmo. We will explore one of the world’s largest movie districts with films on display from all over the world. We will see expert tango dancers put Al Pacino to shame and have a chance to begin to learn the intricacies of what was once considered a “forbidden dance” by Argentine high society.

Planned activities outside Buenos Aires include an excursion to the province of Misiones in northeastern Argentina. We will see the waterfalls of Iguazú -- a distinctive collection of over 200 waterfalls situated in a tropical forest. While in Misiones, we will also visit a colonial Jesuit mission in San Ignacio and a Guaraní village.
