Research: Dr. Maclean, a graduate of the Universities of Cape Town, Rhodes, South Africa, Princeton and Harvard, is Associate Professor of Western Religious Thought at James Madison University. Ordained by the Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa, he follows political and religious changes in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the USA. He has published extensively in the field of religion and politics, as the associate editor of the recent Encyclopedia of Religion and War (2004), co-edited with J. Schultz, The Encyclopedia of Religion in American Politics (1998), edited Reconciliation: Nations and Churches in Latin America (Forthcoming, 2005), and authored Opting For Democracy: Liberation Theologians and the Struggle for Democracy in Brazil (1999). He presented the public Madison Scholar Lecture on "Forgiveness in Politics? The Challenge of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions."
