Departmental Open House
August 30 Thursday: The department of Philosophy & Religion will hold an open house for majors, minors and interested students from 4:30-6:00 in Taylor 405. Join us!
Nobel Laureate
September 21 Friday: The Most Rev. Desmond Mpilo Tutu, Anglican archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa, and a 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner known for his work in ending apartheid, will receive JMU Gandhi Center's highest honor, the Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award, at 7 p.m., at the Convocation Center. Archbishop Tutu's award presentation is entitled "Goodness is Powerful."
Admission is free, and open to all. Seating is on a first come, first seated basis. Convocation doors open at 5 p.m. It is recommended that the audience arrive early to avoid lines and crowds.

September 28 Friday: Professor Rick Lippke (our very own) will give a lecture entitled "To Waive or Not to Waive: The Right to Trial and Plea Bargaining" at 3:30 pm in Keezell G1.
Religion Grad School and Seminary Info Session
October 1 Monday: Dr. Iain Maclean (and perhaps a few others) will discuss Graduate Studies in Religion and Seminary School. Topics to be covered include what it's all about, as well as hints for applying and gaining admission to such programs. Pizza and soda will be provided, and the session will start at 6:00 pm in the philosophy/religion lounge on the second floor of Sheldon Hall.
Tolstoy Lecture
October 2 Tuesday: Jack DuVall, President and founding Director of the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict in Washington, D.C., will present a lecture sponsored by the Gandhi Center. The lecture, "Nonviolent Power and the End of Domination", will take place at 6:30 p.m. in ISAT/HHS 1302.

October 15 Monday: Jeffrey Henderson, William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of Greek at Boston University, and General Editor, Loeb Classical Library, will speak about “Political Humor in Ancient Greece” in Taylor 402 at 7:30 p.m.

October 18 Thursday: Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne will speak about Buddhism and Peace in Grafton-Stovall at 3:30pm.

October 23 Tuesday: Barbara Holdrege, Associate Professor of Religion, UC Santa Barbara, will give a lecture entitled “South Asia and the Middle East: Connecting Cultures outside of and in Spite of the West” in ISAT 159 at 6:30 p.m.

November 15 Thursday: Gandhi Center Visiting Scholar Jakob DeRoover will give a lecture entitled "The Dark Hour of Secularism: Liberal Toleration and Hindu Fundamentalism in Colonial India" at 6:30 pm in Taylor 405.

Philosophers Talk About Philosophy
February 21 Thursday: Phi Sigma Tau, the National Honor Society in Philosophy, will sponsor "Philosophers talking about Philosophy". Featured philosophers are Prof. James Mazoue, Prof. Ge Baas, and Prof. Michael Trocchia. The talks will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Duke Hall 107.
