How to Apply

Complete the Certificate Program Application form online; indicate the appropriate certificate program on the form.

You will need to locate the course number, title, and section number of the course; this information is located on the Outreach & Engagement website under the list of current semester credit courses offered.

For example:

26067 EXED 565 OP01 Instructional Methods in Gifted Education, Dr. Erin Miller

Subject: EXED
Catalog number: 565
Section number: OP01
Title: Instructional Methods in Gifted Education

If you intend to take all the coursework for the certificate, submit the application with a $45 one-time application fee; if you choose this option, you will just need to contact Outreach & Engagement before the start of each semester to be registered in the next course. Students who have not taken a course in their certificate program in a 12 month period will be deactivated, and will need to submit a new certificate program application in order to be reactivated.

If, at this time, you intend to take only one or two courses in the certificate program, complete the Non-Degree Seeking Student Application and submit the application with a $20 application fee; if you choose this option, you will need to re-apply (and submit another $20 application fee) each semester you wish to take a course in this certificate program.

Upon successful submission, you will receive an electronic response confirming receipt, as well as instructions on activating your JMU eID as an applicant. This will allow you to access the Applicant Center on MyMadison (http://www.mymadison.jmu.edu), JMU's student information system, so you can track the status of your application and any supplemental documents.

Once your application has been reviewed by the program coordinator, you will be able to view your admission decision in the Applicant Center.  This process can take up to two weeks.

You will be notified when your tuition bill is ready through your JMU email address. Online tuition payment can be made through accessing MyMadison.

If you have any difficulties with your application or registration, please contact us at outreach@jmu.edu, or 540-568-4253.
